Hi, listeners. Here is Natalie Eddison. Welcome to Have your Say, your favourite
radio phone-in programme. This evening I’d like to hear what you have to say to
the question: What is success? The phone lines are open and we already have our
. Hello, would you tell us who’s calling and where you’re calling from?
Hi, this is Ben and I’m calling from Liverpool. In my opinion success means
money. The more money you have, the more successful you are.
That’s interesting, Ben. So do you think a rich drug dealer is a successful person?
Er, well, no, I was thinking more of people like Bill Gates, Larry Page, Jeff Bezos
– people like that.
You mean people who have made a positive impact on our lives?
Yeah, yeah, that’s what I mean.

Hi, this is Mahesh from Leicester. I don’t think you can define success for
everybody. What success means to you will be different from what it means to me,
or to other people.
So you are saying, Mahesh, that success has many faces.
Yes, and I don’t think it depends on making money. I see what you mean about the
drug dealer. I’d prefer people to see me as a good person than a person who’s made
millions of dollars.

Hi, Natalie. This is Emma from Bedford. I think the two can go hand in hand –
being a good person and having a lot of money.
Good point, Emma.
But for me success means that you are happy with your life and what you do. It
doesn’t really matter what it is, or what other people think. In my opinion, if I’m
doing something I want to do and I enjoy doing it, I’m successful.
That’s an interesting way of looking at things. So you don’t think it’s important to
make an impact on the world around you?
If that makes you happy, yes. But if that’s not what you want, don’t do it. Do your
own thing. And by the way, Natalie, before I go, can I say how much I like your
programme. I listen every week and you always have such interesting topics.

Hi, this is Joanna from London. I agree with Emma, but in a way I agree with Ben
and Mahesh, too. For me success is when somebody achieves their own goals. That
goal might be to make a lot of money, it might be to get a good job, or to have kids
and a family. Everybody has to decide on their goals for themselves. But I see your
point about the ‘successful’ drug dealer.
