THINK-TAC-TOE for To Kill a Mockingbird
Choose three activities that make a Tic-Tac-Toe: three across, three down, or three diagonally.
Put your name and today’s date at the top, circle your three choices, staple all work to the back of
this sheet, and turn in.
#1:
Make a chart listing physical
and personality descriptions of
of Atticus, Boo Radley, Bob
Ewell, and Scout. Include
some exact phrases and words
(with page numbers) from the
novel.
#2:
Write a letter from Tom
Robinson to Atticus,
composed right before the day
he was shot. Make it clear
whether he plans to escape,
fears being killed before his
appeal, or both.
#4:
On an ENTIRE piece of blank
paper, illustrate a room or
office of one of the major
characters in the novel. On
the back of the drawing,
explain / defend your design in
a short written paragraph. Be
as skillful and insightful as
possible; make it clear you’ve
carefully read the text.
#5:
Write a speech to the school
board. Your purpose is either
to recommend TKAM be
eliminated from the SOHS
library OR defend it from such
censorship. In both cases,
quote three text examples that
you might find controversial
and explain either why it is
offensive OR why leaving it as
is helps us better understand
something about the novel.
#8:
Write a poem from the point
of view of Tom, Boo, Jem, or
Mayella as speaker. Make it
at least 16 lines long, and do
NOT put the character’s name
in the title or poem. Be
prepared to share! We should
be able to guess the speaker
after reading.
#7:
In an essay, argue who is the
most sympathetic character in
the novel. Defend your
choice with at least three text
quotes as evidence.
#3:
Imagine if the events of
TKAM had happened in the
Alabama of the last ten years.
How would the story and
conflict be the same?
Different? Write as an essay
OR pick one major scene and
rewrite it as a short story;
minimum 2 full pages long.
#6:
Match 10 quotes to 10
different characters (Tom,
Jem, Scout, Atticus, Dolphus
Raymond, Miss Maudie, Mrs.
Henry Lafayette Dubose, Bob
Ewell, Calpurnia, Dill), along
with the page number where
the quote occurs.
#9:
Read three paragraph excerpts
from the book that highlight
three different characters.
Write down three to five key
words or short phrases that
help you determine
characterization. Then, for
each character, write one or
two sentences that sum up
their personality, explaining
why you came to that
conclusion.

QUOTE
1. “Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t
do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. . . . [T]hey
don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s
why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
2. “I most positively am not, I can use one hand good as
the other. One hand good as the other,” he added, glaring
at the defense table.
3. “It’s like bein’ a caterpillar in a cocoon . . . Like
somethin’ asleep wrapped up in a warm place. I always
thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world,
least that’s what they seemed like.”
4. “Don’t you contradict me! . . . [W]hat are you doing in
those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole,
young lady! You’ll grow up waiting on tables if
somebody doesn’t change your ways – a Finch waiting
on tables at the O.K. Café – hah!’
5. “Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try
more’n the rest of ‘em-”
6. “They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re
entitled to full respect for their opinions . . . but before I
can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The
one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s
conscience.”
7. “They’s my comp’ny.” [A few minutes later:] “You
keep it . . . you’re my company.”
8. “[Y]ou mean why do I pretend? Well, it’s very simple
. . . Some folks don’t – like they way I live. Now I could
say the hell with ‘em, I don’t care if they don’t like it. . . .
but I don’t . . . I try to give ‘em a reason, you see.”
9. “He’s in my grade . . . and he does right well. He’s a
good boy . . . a real nice boy. We brought him home for
dinner one time. Maybe he told you about me, I beat him
up one time but he was real nice about it. Tell him hey
for me, won’t you?”
10. “Ah – Mr. Finch? . . . Ah – I won [Jem’s pants] from
him . . . We were playin’ strip poker up yonder by the
fishpool.”
