TEACHER: WEEK OF: Finelli/Rafferty October 8, 2012-October 12, 2012 MONDAY Today’s Objective: No School Teaching Activities/Classwork: No School UPPER DARBY HIGH SCHOOL LESSON PLAN DEPARTMENT: English CLASS/SUBJECT: English 9 TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY Today’s Objective: The Learner Will: -Review definition of theme analyze theme in the story, “My English” -Use vocabulary words in sentences and pictures -Infer definitions of vocabulary words based on pictures and context clues -Analyze and interpret flat/round and static/dynamic character traits Teaching Activities/Classwork: 1. Students will review the definition of theme in fiction and non-fiction based on Aesop’s Fables and in previously read stories. Students will state what he/she believes is the most important life lesson to him or herself. 2. Students will receive a list of vocabulary words for the upcoming story and conduct a gallery walk activity. 3. Students will be instructed to write down one sentence using a vocabulary word and draw one picture that implies the word’s meaning. 4. In groups, students will rewrite the sentences and draw the pictures on a poster. Each student will rotate to different posters and review the pictures/sentences, trying to define the given vocabulary word. 5. Students will read the story, “Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and Today’s Objective: The Learner Will: -Compare/contrast author’s use of theme in writing -Create and apply a theme in a piece of writing Today’s Objective: The Learner Will -Create a problem and solution essay about an issue that confronts their school or community. -Review media to examine an issue/problem that is relevant -Discuss possible solutions to real-life and relevant problems -Review author’s purpose, voice, theme, informational text, and pronouns. Teaching Activities/Classwork: 1. Students will complete a list of issues that come to mind in regards to issues that confront his/her school and community 2. Students will review pictures/stories from the media to examine relevant problems and help brainstorm ideas and possible solutions. 3. Students will create a “problem profile” about the topic he or she is choosing to write about. 3. Students will consider audience of essay and decide on which strategy he or she will use to write essay. 4. Students will begin writing rough draft of essay using a graphic organizer outline. 5. Closure: Students will share a possible solution to his/her problem by writing it on the board before end of class. Today’s Objective: ‐ Review author’s purpose, voice, theme, informational text, prefixes and suffixes, and pronouns. - Write rough draft of exposition - Incorporate persuasive techniques into draft - Indicate and identify writer’s implied problem and solution in essay. Teaching Activities/Classwork: 1. Students will complete a vocabulary workshop on using a thesaurus. 2. The students will review the use of Venn diagrams using his/her middle school in comparison to high school. 3. The students will read the two assigned stories in the text, “If I forget Thee, On Earth…” and “Silent Spring,” comparing and contrasting the use of themes. 4. The students will be given a prompt in which he or she has to incorporate a theme that he/she believes to be most important in their lives. 5. Closure: Students will switch stories with a partner and try to interpret the theme he/she used in their writing. Teaching Activities/Classwork: 1. Students will participate in a review game for Benchmark 2 test. 2. Students will continue following outline of rough draft and applying outline into a paragraph-form essay. 3. Students will incorporate use of counter-argument and other persuasive techniques into the exposition. 4. Students will conduct a peerreview with a partner’s essay and underline the proposed problem and solution in the essay. Circle any spelling/grammar errors. 5. Closure: 3-2-1 activity. Homework: -No School answer character analysis questions while reading. 6. Students will begin writing a short fictional piece using the prompt: “The secret life of a teacher.” Homework: -Students will complete two paragraphs on a story about “the secret life of a teacher.” Students will use characterization techniques and create a round and a flat character and make one character dynamic and one static within the story. Label the use of characterization. PLEASE NOTE: Plans are subject to change and revision. Homework: -Students will read the “informational texts” on pages 155-158 and answer the questions on page 158 (a, b, and c).
