Pope John XXIII & Vatican II Documents Project Introduction Blessed Pope John XXIII was inspired by the Holy Spirit to call the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). In his view, the purpose of Vatican II was to update and renew the church. The Second Vatican Council produced 16 documents. These documents sought to renew the liturgy, explain the role of the Church in the modern world, and advance the cause of Christian unity. For an overview of the topic, click here.
