Sample Introductions
Level One
The Chrysalids is an example of individuality because there are
characters that have to escape to the Fringes.
Level Two
The Chrysalids shows the theme of individuality. There are examples
of individuality in the characters, the society and the Fringes people.
Level Three
The novel The Chrysalids by John Wyndom shows the courage it takes
to truly be an individual in a hostile world. We see individuality in the
character development of David. Moreover, we see the hostility
toward individuals in the treatment of the Fringes people. Finally, we
see that individuality is valued neither in the ‘primitive’ culture of
Labrador nor the advanced culture of Zealand.
Level Four
Humans all face the challenge of expressing their own individuality;
however, individual expression was not always permitted. History and
literature remind one of the cost paid for our freedom and
individuality. The novel The Chrysalids by John Wyndom shows the
courage it takes to truly be an individual in a hostile world. The
struggle to express individuality is shown through the characterization
of David, the oppression of the individual is exemplified through the
Sealand people, and the treatment of the Fringes people show the cost
of individuality. In the end, the novel reminds people to be thankful
for the individual freedoms they enjoy.
