Policy and Safety Manual Questions
Most companies have a manual that contains the company rules, policies, and safety
procedures. You will be required to read it and sign a form which is a legal document stating
that you read it and that you understood what you read. It is your right and your responsibility to
know the rules, policies, and safety procedures of your place of employment.
Attached to this page is the Policy & Safety Manual of The Espresso Express. Imagine
that you have been hired by that company. Read their Manual. Make sure you understand the
rules and the information for Espresso Express. Then answer the following questions. Use
complete sentences and proper spelling and grammar.

The Espresso Express
Safety and Policy Manual
Welcome new employee! You are expected to read and understand the following
information. If there is anything that is unclear, please ask your manager about it.
1. All safety procedures must be followed at all times.
2. Employees must be trained on all espresso, computer, and other equipment before
working unsupervised on any equipment. Training is provided within three days of
employment.
3. Practical jokes and “horsing” around are forbidden at all times. Horsing around included
but is not limited to friendly boxing, pushing, fake tripping, etc.
4. Use of illegal drugs and alcohol is forbidden. Employees found with either illegal drugs
or alcohol will be terminated immediately. Use of drugs prescribed by a physician or
over-the-counter drugs which could affect work performance must be reported to
supervisors and proper precautions must be followed.
5. Work areas must be kept clean at all times.
6. Appropriate clothing and uniforms must be worn at all times. The uniform includes
black slacks, black shoes, white shirt (not sleeveless), and store apron. Jewelry may
include rings and ear posts without symbols. (No dangle earrings allowed.)
7. No smoking is allowed in the building or within 50 feet of the doors and windows.
6. Smoking is permitted in the designated smoking area behind the building. No littering is
allowed.
8. All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported to the manager as soon as possible.
9. All employees are responsible for keeping a safe work environment. If an employee
knows of an unsafe situation, it is to be reported to the manager immediately.
10. When floors are mopped, the yellow caution wet floor signs must be placed in
appropriate and visible areas until the floors are dry. Remove the signs promptly.

Safety on the Job – Essay
Before you start this writing assignment, you may want to explore the OSHA web site
more, to learn more about safety on the job. Your assignment is to write a three to five
paragraph essay about safety where you work.
You may focus on any safety related issue, such as one from the following list:





Child labor laws that relate to you due to your age and/or the type of work you do
Personal protective equipment that you and/or others wear or should wear on the job,
because of the work that you do
Hazards that exist in your place of work and what steps are taken to ensure that the
hazards do not result in accidents
The safety procedures manual and training at your work site
Safety placards that exist at your work site (you can take pictures and describe them)
Talk with your Teacher Advisor is you are having trouble coming up with a topic to write about.
 In your essay, pick a topic and stick to it. Be sure to fully develop your ideas.
 Organize your thoughts. Present your ideas in a clear and logical order.
 Think about the audience you want to read your essay. Do you need to be persuasive or
do you need only to present information?
 Give your essay a title, which you format and space differently than the body of the
essay.
 Use correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, of course.
 Choose the best words for what you want to say.
 Type your essay.
 Double space, use Arial 10 or 12 pt. font or Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
 Indent paragraphs, using the Format menu.
 Type your name and the date at the top of the essay, aligned right.
 Put one piece of clip art or a photo into your essay. A photo from your work place is
preferred.
 If your essay is longer than one page, insert page numbers in the footers.
 Give the essay to your Teacher Advisor on a disk. He will proofread it using the “Track
Changes” option in Word, and give it back to you to do a final draft. You might need to
ask about using “Track Changes.” That’s okay. You did not learn it in Keyboarding.
