Content Area: English Language Arts, Grade 10 Title: The Webliography of Shakespeare’s Macbeth Enjoying Macbeth by William Shakespeare Site Author: Ed Friedlander, MD URL: http://www.pathguy.com/macbeth.htm Summary: This is the Entertainment Tonight for Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It divulges the gory details related to Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Commentary: The content on this site is intended for teens, and I would probably restrict the use of this site to older adolescents (grades 10-12), although given the nature of the play, I doubt that I would choose it for whole-class instruction in lower grades. The author provides juicy details about the plot and history of the play. The Curse of Macbeth Site Author: Dina Tritsch URL: http://pretallez.com/onstage/theatre/broadway/macbeth/macbeth_curse.html Summary: This site explains the curse of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and why actors refer to it as “The Scottish Play.” Commentary: The ‘snippets’ on this site are interesting, but no citations are given, so it is difficult to confirm their truth. Theatre Superstitions - Macbeth URL: http://www.siskiyous.edu/theatre/theatersuperstitions/macbeth.htm Summary: This site offers an alternate theory as to why Macbeth is known as “The Scottish Play” Commentary: This site has interesting graphics, and a more believable theory. (Financial ruin) The site also tells visitors who is responsible for this theory, although it does not provide a detailed citation. Supernatural Paranormalities URL: http://paranormal-supernatural.blogspot.com/2009/11/curse-of-shakespeares-scottish-play.html Summary: This part of the site is devoted to the superstitions and myths surrounding Macbeth. Commentary: This is a very interesting site with plenty of visuals and videos. BBC’s History of Macbeth URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/macbeth.shtml Summary: This site offers clear and concise information about the history of Macbeth, the Scottish king who was the basis for Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name. Commentary: This is a trustworthy and useful site for background information. Google Lit Trips: Macbeth URL: http://www.googlelittrips.com/GoogleLit/912/Entries/2006/10/1_Macbeth_by_William_Shakespeare.html Summary: Google Lit Trips is an educational website powered by Google designed to help students experience settings in literature through virtual field trips. Commentary: I think this website is a great resource for students and teachers who want to increase comprehension by building background knowledge. Cawdor Castle Official Website URL: http://www.cawdorcastle.com/macbeth.cfm Summary: This website pertains to Cawdor Castle in Scotland, the castle associated with Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The site explains the reasons for the association, and dispels the myths surrounding the castle. Commentary: This would be an interesting resource for students, since the castle is actually open to visitors. Although it is a commercial website, it is the official site visitors use to book accommodations in the castle. Students could use this as a part of a project to research and plan a ‘vacation’ to visit the castle. William Shakespeare Language, Vocabulary, and Dictionary URL: http://www.william-shakespeare.info/william-shakespeare-dictionary-c.htm Summary: This website contains a list of vocabulary terms and information about the language in Shakespeare’s plays, including Macbeth. Commentary: The layout of this site is distracting and confusing to the eye. It is difficult to distinguish the terms from their definitions, and the ads on the sidebar from the content. The topic and content, however, are useful for students who may struggle with the archaic vocabulary in the play. SchoolTube: MacbethMob Style URL: http://www.schooltube.com/video/55e9d1b204ddc6834615/Macbeth-Mob-Style Summary: This video was created by seniors as a video response to Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Commentary: This video will definitely keep students’ attention and help them think about events in the play in a more contemporary context. It can also serve as an example of a multimedia response to literature, possibly encouraging students to create their own videos. Folger Shakespeare Library URL: http://www.folger.edu Summary: Folger Shakespeare Library contains resources for teachers and students to use when reading Shakespeare’s plays such as background information and ideas for bringing the plays to life in the classroom. Commentary: This website is one of my favorite resources for teaching Shakespeare. It contains highquality content in an accessible and engaging format.
