Thomas Pynchon focuses a lot on the disorderly lives of his main
characters and the paranoia they have of the rest of the world whether
it is the people that come into their lives, or the events that the
characters encounter. Many of the events in the main characters lives
are so sudden and disturbing that they are not sure if the events are
real or not; therefore, it causes these characters to believe that
they may be losing their minds (Muste).

Summary-- The Crying of Lot 49
The Crying of Lot 49 is a novel about a woman named Oedipa Maas .
Misguided and confused, Oedipa falls into a never ending path of trying
to find the answer to a question that no one knows. Oedipa pursues her
quests though encounters with human wreckage and scientific puzzles;
however, she never knows whether or not she is purposely
being lead through a never ending maze (Muste).
