GETTING IN AND OUT

There is self check-in to the Lodge. When you arrive, you can let yourself in.

The first door you will see is mostly glass and leads into the foyer. It’s always unlocked, so come right in. The second door is a heavy wooden door with a keypad entry. Please double check the code with Ariel before your arrival as it changes from time to time. If you enter the code incorrectly, just wait 30 seconds for the system to clear and try again.

PLEASE KEEP BOTH THE FRONT DOORS

CLOSED AT ALL TIMES!!!!

The one bedroom apartment is straight down the hall on the right. When you arrive the door to the apartment will be unlocked. The apartment key will be on the kitchen table.

The front door is always opened by the code. To unlock the sliding glass door to the back yard, lift the piece of wood at the bottom of the door. Replace it before you leave.

The two bedroom apartment is directly at the top of the first flight of stairs. When you arrive the door will be unlocked, and the apartment keys on the kitchen table. The front door is always opened by the code, so you just need the one key.

The double private room is at the top of the second flight of stairs. When you arrive the door will be unlocked and the key inside the room.

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

When you leave: Leave the keys on the kitchen table and the apartment door unlocked.

Thanks!

There is a very friendly large black cat who lives in the house, and he loves to escape, so please, please keep the front doors closed, even if you are just going out for a minute.

His name is Motorhead. Also – please don’t feed Motorhead or invite him into the apartments. Not everyone likes cats, and it’s not cool to teach him to beg. Thanks!

GENERAL INFO

The Lodge is a “turnkey” apartment, which means we give you the key, clean sheets, clean towels, pots, pans, dishes, toilet paper, etc., and the rest is up to you. Ariel lives on the top floor is often on the premises and she can answer many of your questions, but please consult this brochure or the map to see if you can find the answer first. However, if anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask.

If anything is broken or not working correctly, please let Ariel know, even if it doesn’t bother you!! If she doesn’t know about it, she can’t fix it!!

Please do not bug the other residents. As polite as they are, they are not receiving anything to act as a tour guide for all the guests, so please respect their time, space, and privacy. If you need to contact Ariel, please just call or text her, don’t ring the doorbell unless absolutely necessary. However, if anyone’s music is too loud, or there is an emergency, such as water gushing in, a fire, you are locked out, etc, and you can’t get ahold of Ariel, please don’t hesitate to talk to who ever necessary!!!

If you are uncomfortable for any reason, please let Ariel know. She would like to make your stay as pleasant and happy as possible, so please don’t hesitate to call her.

TV

There is Cable, and a TV and DVD player in the bedroom of the one bedroom apartment.

The two bedroom has a large TV, and cable, with InDemand on Channels 200 and 220.

These are free. There is access to other InDemand movies, but these must be paid for. If you do order a movie, please leave cash to cover the cost when you leave.

CLEANING/WASHING

As stated above, the Lodge is a “turnkey” apartment. This means you receive clean sheets and towels upon arrival, but are responsible for washing them yourself if you would like them cleaned in the interim.

There is a washer and dryer in the basement which you are welcome to use. I apologize for the fact that the basement is still a bit scary. I’ve only had the house a short while, and it’s next on the project list. However, the washer and dryer are new, High Efficiency

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

models and work well. The washer and dryer cycle each take about 60 minutes. It’s pretty self explanatory, the only tricky part is where you put the detergent – there is a little slide out tray on the top left corner. Under this tray is a little lever that needs to be pushed to the right to pull the drawer open. Once you start the wash cycle, you cannot open the door again, because it is a front loader and water will spill out. Please buy your own detergent at one of the deli’s nearby.

If you prefer to have someone else wash your clothes, there is a Laundromat on the corner of Norman and Manhattan Ave’s (basically catty-corner across the main intersection in front of the house. If you drop it off in the morning, they’ll have it done by 5pm.

GARBAGE

There are separate containers for trash and for recycling - paper, and plastic/metal/glass.

Trash bags are under the sink if you need more. Black bags are for Regular trash, clear for recycling. If you are on the ground floor and would like to separate compost, there is a compost pile behind the stone fence in the back yard, just throw on any vegetable matter.

PLEASE SEPARATE YOUR RECYCLING FROM YOUR GARBAGE!!!

GARBAGE – BLACK BAG

PAPER, PLASTIC (BOTTLES ONLY), GLASS, AND METAL – CLEAR BAG

Garbage days – Monday night, Wednesday night, Friday night. Recycling is Wednesday night. If you fill up a bag, you can put it right on the curb after 6pm. Or you can put it in the appropriately labeled can out front. If the bags aren’t full, just leave it and it will be cleaned after you go.

Please Recycle

Paper – everything except soft paper (tissues, paper towels) and milk cartons (these go with the plastic)

Plastic/Metal/Glass/Milk Cartons – go in the same bin. Please take the caps off !! Only plastic bottles are recycled in ny – this means the top has to be smaller than the bottom.

All metal is recyclable. All Glass is recyclable. The caps are not. They go in the

Garbage. It’s really great if you take the time to separate your recycling. Thanks! (and do you really want us picking through your garbage after you leave?)

TRANSPORTATION

The nearest subway station is the Nassau Avenue stop on the G train. The Norman Ave. exit lets out right on the corner of Norman and Manhattan Ave, next to the Lodge.

Car service is $6-$7 anywhere in Greenpoint/Williamsburg 718 383-8300. Call them, they come and get you in 2-5 minutes and honk when they are out front. They are very nice and very safe. Usually a black limousine type car, sometimes an SUV. They can take you to Manhattan, too, and the airports. Generally $15-$25 anywhere in Manhattan, but you can ask when you call.

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

Yellow Taxis from Manhattan to here are about $15 or less unless you are far uptown.

Tell the cab you are going to Greenpoint, near McGuinness Blvd. Most of them know the way here.

To and From the Airports

LaGuardia - a cab is your best bet. It’s about $20 and takes 15 minutes. Otherwise you have to take a bus to the subway, take the subway to manhattan, change trains, change again. It’s a pain. If the cabby doesn’t know the way, tell them to take the BQE to

Brooklyn, Morgan exit, continue straight off the exit, Right on McGuinness Blvd. (the big intersection) then Left on Norman (next after Nassau). Then it’s on the Right past

Leonard.

JFK –

I like to take a cab cause it’s easiest, and only about $35. If you call 718 383-

8300 they can quote you a price and will even come meet you at the airport for about the same price as a yellow cab.

Or you can take the AirTrain to the E train (direction towards manhattan).

Transfer at the last stop before Manhattan – Queens Plaza – to the G train (direction towards Smith and 9 th

st).

Get off at the Nassau Avenue stop, and exit at the Norman ave. Exit.

Cross Manhattan Ave, and it’s on the left, just past the Pizza place.

Newark –From Newark I like to take the bus ($7) to Grand Central, and then just get a cab from there (about $15). If they go through the tunnel you have to pay for the tunnel, but it’s a shorter ride, so it comes out about even.

Or you can take the subway from Grand Central (where the bus drops off)– the 4, 5, or 6 to Union Square/14 th

st, then the L train (direction Brooklyn) to Lorimer, then switch to the G train (direction queens) 1 stop to Nassau ave., exit at Norman Ave, cross Manhattan ave, and it’s on the left, just past the Pizza place.

A cab from Newark is about $75 - $90

Getting to Manhattan

By subway there are a few options –

No walking – G train – right outside the door. Great when the weather is nasty or you have lots of bags.

10 minute walk (but less possible wait time for the train) – L train from Bedford ave. www.hopstop.com

is a great site for mapping your route anywhere in the city.

Midtown Manhattan – you can take the G towards Queens (entrance closest to the house)

Go 3 stops to the last stop

Transfer to the E or V train

The G train is shorter than the platform, so after you enter the turnstile you have to walk halfway down the platform. I don’t know why they don’t have any signs indicating this, but that’s New York for you.

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

The L train goes across 14 th

st, and crosses pretty much every other train. You can walk to the L train – about 10 minutes, and it’s a nice, safe walk. Or you can take the G train towards Smith/9 th st. (entrance across Manhattan ave.)

Go 1 stop to Metropolitan

Transfer to the L train

(note, on the return trip, when transferring from the L back to the G, the stop is called

Lorimer, not Metropolitan)

To get to the L:

Go right out the door, left on Manhattan Ave., first right on Bedford.

Stay on Bedford to North 7 th St. and you will see the subway. It’s a nice walk through the park, and Bedford ave. is the main shopping and dining and hipster hangout. The L is the best bet at night and on Sundays, when the G train can be slow.

NEIGHBORHOOD: www.freewilliamsburg.com

has listing for all the local bars, galleries, and happenings in Greenpoint and

Williamsburg.

The Lodge is in Greenpoint, and right on the edge of

Williamsburg. Greenpoint is traditionally a Polish neighborhood, and that is still the dominant ethnicity.

The last 10 years has seen a steady influx of hipsters, artists, and young families. Especially those priced out of Williamsburg, or tired of being so, so hip.

Williamsburg has been touted as the “Hippest

Neighborhood in America” (talk to Utne reader if you disagree!) Most businesses and restaurants are small, unique, and locally owned. There are a million places

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

to eat, drink, shop, and see live bands - each cooler than the next. The main drag is Bedford ave, which is two blocks from the Lodge.

To get to Bedford Ave:

Right out the front door

Left on Manhattan Ave.

Right on Bedford.

To get to the water front.

At night the closest you can get is at the end of North

11 th

Right out the front door.

Go a few blocks, then Norman becomes Wythe Ave.

Afew more blocks, then right on North 11 th .

During the day – turn right on North 7 th and there is a park right along the water’s edge.

It’s nicer to walk down Bedford and then turn, as Wythe ave is pretty industrial and boring (unless you like old industrial buildings, water towers, and graffiti, then knock yourself out)

FOOD www.freewilliamsburg.com

has listings of most of the area restaurants, along with reviews, maps, and menus.

There are tons of good restaurants around here.

Greenpoint is New York City’s great Polish neighborhood, so if you like pierogies, fried fish, meat of any kind, potato pancakes, cabbage or beet salad, or borscht, you’ve come to the right place.

My favorites: (I won’t bother with names – they are in polish)

Cafeteria Style – on the corner of Norman and Leonard

(left out the door, first corner, same side). Great for feeling like you are in the old country. Order at the counter (ask for the English menu) and wait for a tray. Make sure you get the complimentary Kompot, or juice.

I recommend their soups – only $2-$2.50.

Red borscht is a beet broth.

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

Ukranian Borscht is a creamy beet broth with lots of veggies,

White Borscht is a cream broth with bits of kielbasa sausage and potato.

The entrees come with choice of potato, kasha

(buckwheat, it’s like rice, but different), and a medley of cold side salads. This set up is standard for most of the polish places.

The fried pierogies are also good. I like to get the mixed with some of every flavor.

Family Restaurant or “suit of armor” – Apparently the name means Kings Feast. On Manhattan, just off of

Norman. Take a right out the door, Left on Manhattan, pass the liquor store, it’s on the Left with two suits of armor standing out front. You can’t miss it. It has a nice, dark wood, family atmosphere. It’s a great place to bring your parents.

I highly recommend the fried trout special. It’s not breaded, lightly fried, sweet and delicious.

Also their Apple Fritters for desert are amazing.

Quaint Café - more popular with the hipsters. Has table service, great décor – like grandma’s house.

Take a left on Manhattan, it’s about halfway down the block on the left and has lots of lights in the window and plastic table cloths and fake flowers all over.

Their fried pierogies are incredible.

Everything else:

Here is a basic list of restaurants I like that cover pretty much all the bases. You can look them up on www.freewilliamsburg.com

for more info.

Closest to here –

Five Leaves – my favorite restaurant with the best steak anywhere! Entrees are around $20, but worth about $35. They are open 7am till 1am and have great breakfast, lunch, and dinner, great pseudo –old décor, outdoor seating, nice servers.

PLEASE RESPECT QUIET HOURS 10AM-10PM.

Eat – Mostly organic, really yummy. Great breakfast food served all day. – Corner of Leonard and Meserole, take a left out the door, first left on Leonard, first right on Meserole, it’s on the corner on the right. The frittata’s are amazing. They have a cute little garden out back. The portions tend to be small, and they have lots of tapas sized dishes. Good for snacks or brunch.

Also – the pizza next door is the best in New York. No kidding. It’s as good as it smells.

If you walk left on Manhattan ave there are a few Asian restaurants – Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese – they are all good. Amarin, the thai restaurant between Bedford and

Driggs on Manhattan has incredible mashed potatoes.

Don’t ask why, just enjoy.

Juliette – French – North 5 th st. Between Bedford and

Berry – one of my absolute favorite restaurants.

Though I haven’t been since 5 Leaves opened (see above)

Moto - Nuevo American, 349 Broadway, Brooklyn NY 11211

(Corner of Hooper) PHONE: 718.599.6895. they have a really cool old-fashioned French motorcycle inspired décor, and usually an accordian, or 3 piece jug band.

Get there early or you might have to wait. It’s a bit far from the Lodge, but an easy cab ride. It’s worth it.

Aurora - CUISINE: Italian, ADDRESS: 70 Grand Street,

Brooklyn NY 11211 (at Wythe Avenue) PHONE: 718.388.5100

Dumont Burger – voted new york’s best burger - CUISINE:

Bliss - yummy hippie food – Bedford and N. 7 th (by subway) PHONE: (718) 599-2547 AVERAGE ENTREE: $9

BARS www.freewilliamsburg.com

has a listing of all bars, events, etc. with reviews and photos.

Williamsburg is pretty much the bar and live music capital of new york city. It has one of the best music scenes in America, or so they say.

Some of my faves –

Closest – Enid’s – has food and a bar. – Corner of

Driggs and Manhattan

Also – Matchless – divey hipster bar across the street from Enids – the sign is an old Matchless strut sign

Black Betty – small, but usually has good dancing.

Monday nights the reverend plays live gospel.

Saturdays are danceable hip hop. Corner of Havemeyer and Metropolitan.

Cocos and Coco 66 – small plates of yummy food, live music, pool, table tennis, great people. Greenpoint ave, between Franklin and the river.

Pencil Factory – Great place to sit and have a beer.

Also great bourbon, whiskey, and rye selection. Corner of Greenpoint Ave. and Franklin Ave.
