Fire Policy and Science
After doing the assigned readings and participating in class discussions, you should
be able to:
 Discuss the historical context in which fire policy was developed in the
United States.

 Describe the main components of the Healthy Forest Initiative (HFI) and
the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA)
 Explain the meaning of “Categorical Exclusion of hazardous-fuel-reduction
actions”
 Define “condition classes” and “fire regime groups” and be able to give
examples of each.
 Be able to construct a coherent argument with specific examples both
supporting and opposing the HFI and HFRA legislation.
 Be able to discuss the effectiveness of the HFI/HFRA fuel treatments
program in terms of achieving its original goals, both in terms of reducing
home ignition risk and promoting healthy ecosystems.
