June 29, 2011 Lecture Highlights Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Impact on the Civil War at the Main Library on July 24, 3:00 p.m. Abraham Lincoln is credited with greeting Harriet Beecher Stowe as the “little lady that caused this big war.” While documentation of this quote is sketchy, the impact of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the Civil War was profound. The best selling novel of the 19th century, which sold over 300,000 copies its first year in print, awakened the nation to the conditions of slavery and fueled the anti-slavery movement. Join Helen Spoon, Friends of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House Board Member and Stowe scholar, as she presents “The Little Lady and the Civil War” on July 24 at the Main Library (800 Vine Street) at 3:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor Huenefeld Tower Room. This program, jointly sponsored by the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, is part of yearlong activities recognizing Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 200th birthday and 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War.
