Description:
Science is central to social change and development. It provides the knowledge inputs for
institutional and technological innovations that drive social change and development. In
this research cluster, science is to be understood as encompassing the systematic study of
the structure and behavior of the natural and social worlds. Thus, the cluster takes as
object of study the intellectual and practical activities in the natural sciences, the social
sciences, and their allied disciplines. The themes of specific interest to this research
cluster inevitably comprise the following:

Epistemic cultures. Culture of universities, research institutions, think tanks,
government research agencies and knowledge-intensive firms. Forms of
knowledge production (e.g., disciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary).
Transformations in communication, education and training accompanying the use
of information and communication technologies in society.

Policy research. Governance of scientific knowledge production and
dissemination. Models of research policy in the Philippines.

National innovation systems. Structures and agents of knowledge sharing and
innovation stimulation. Cultural and systemic contexts of national innovation
systems. Relationship between scientific research and national development.

Knowledge for development. Utilization of scientific knowledge in the form of
institutional and technological innovations for further social development.
Information and communication technologies for development (ICTD).
