Ch. 18: Pip and Joe join the men for a night at the pub where they meet Jaggers, who at first insults Mr. Wopsle and then tells Pip that he has come into a large property. These chapters show the true emotional level of the novel. Pip is full of emotion. Spite for Estella, confusion over how he feels about Biddy, and sadness and happiness about leaving to London. He is fulfilling his dreams, but he does not know if he really wants his dreams to be fulfilled. It seems like he is wondering if what he wanted is what he really wants. “it was an uneasy bed now, and I never slept the old sound sleep in it any more.” (154) his sheer confusion over his situation is shown here. He can not sleep soundly at night due to how he feels a bout going to London. He’s nervous, and he would have never imagined that he would not want to leave the forge. Ch. 21: Pip is taken to Herbert pocket’s apartment where he learns the Herbert is the pale young gentlemen. In these chapters, a showing of Pip’s growth is shown. Throughout these chapters, Pip feels greater than everyone else around him, one because he has been close with Mrs. Havisham, and two because he now has a fortune. “you are dissatisfied on account of my rise in fortune […] it’s a bad side of human nature.” this is from when Pip is speaking with Biddy, and it shows his growth, but not really a good growth. After news of his fortune, Pip starts to act stuck up around Biddy and everyone else in his home. He automatically jumps to the conclusion that Biddy is jealous about his fortune when really she was only trying to speak with him. He sees that London is dark almost evil and that everyone has a separate agenda. Everyone in this world is looking out for themselves, and Pip is thrown amongst this from something completely unlike it. London is full of crime and wrongdoing. London is like the majority of the world during that point in time, and Pip is just learning this. Chs. 25-27 New Characters: Aged Parent: Seemingly deaf, lives with Wemmicks. Little girl: Takes care of the Aged. New Setting: Wemmick’s home: Pip goes here for dinner one night, where he meets the Aged and enjoys dinner with Wemmicks. Ch. 25- Pip dines with Wemmick, and meets the Aged parent Ch. 26: Pip and Drummle have a conflict and then pip goes to see Jaggers. Ch. 27: Joe visits Pip in London, and it is quite awkward due to how joe is treating Pip extremely different. Dickins’ uses joe as a way to poke fun at the lower classes of society. He shows him as very uneducated, and because of this he can not seem to comprehend simple things such as having the confidence to talk to someone. It is shown in miss Havisham’s when he talks to Pip instead of Miss Havisham, and it is shown when he visits pip and treats him totally different. “Whenever he subsided into affection, he called me Pip, but whenever he relapsed into politeness, he called me sir.” (235) this shows Joe’s seemingly immature way of handling things. He also feels that everything has changed and this could be a result of a lack of education. He does not have the confidence to hold his own in a conversation and not worry about being punished for barbaric things, even with the boy he raised.
