Theory and Practice of Basketball

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A lecture and discussion of all phases of basketball coaching techniques including styles of
offense and defense and methods of teaching these skills. Three hours lecture-laboratory per
week. 2 semester hours credit

Theory and Practice of Basketball is a laboratory based course. Information related to the
theory and practice of basketball as it pertains to this course comes primarily from laboratory
lecture and student participation in laboratory exercises.
GRADING POLICIES:
The standing of a student in each course is expressed by one of the following letters and
corresponding grading system:
A – 100 – 90
B – 89 – 80
C – 79 – 70
D – 69 – 60
F – 59 or less
The Chipola Catalog provides specific information regarding other outcomes from the grading
system. A student’s Grade Point Average is derived from the grading system/quality point scale.

Class attendance, demonstrations, a daily journal and written tests.
LIBRARY AND ON-LINE REFERENCE MATERIALS:
The library is a comprehensive, learning resource center providing information in print,
electronic, and multimedia format to support the educational objectives of the College. In
addition to print media, online catalogs and resources can be accessed through
www.linccweb.org and www.netlibrary.com. Library hours are posted each semester at the
building entrance.

TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES:
The Information Technology Center, located in the library, is equipped with computer
workstations. Lab hours are posted each semester at the building entrance.
ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE:
Each student enrolled in this course will participate in a variety of lab experiences involving the
theory and practice of basketball. Students must be able to demonstrate basic competencies in
the execution of specific basketball skills as well as the analysis of others executing specific
basketball skills.
ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES:
Because this course is a laboratory based course, student attendance is paramount to
student success. Each student is allowed four (4) absences. Any absence beyond four (4)
will result in a reduction of the student’s lab participation grade.
Chipola policy allows each instructor to specify in the course handout the attendance policy. It
also allows the instructor to decide whether or not an absence is excusable and what affect the
absence or tardy may have on the grade.
A student is allowed to repeat a course a maximum of three (3) times. On the third attempt, a
student cannot withdraw; he must receive a grade.
MAKE-UP POLICY:
Chipola policy allows each instructor to specify in the instructor handout the makeup policy.
