SUMMARY OF PROJECT EXPERIENCE
James Davies has extensive international experience in the fields and industries outlined below.

POWER,TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION
Responsible for the construction and maintenance of a wide variety of distribution and
transmission projects in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Zambia which included 220kV & 66kV, 33kV &
11kV transmission lines & substations where power was imported from the CAPCO at 330kV and
interconnected with the 220kV transmission network supplying power to all the mines on the
Zambian Copperbelt. A period spent as Principal Engineer with the Anglo American Corporation
providing experience in the design and specification of projects for the Copperbelt transmission
system.
Undertook the design and specification of the complete upgrading of the MAM network for the
MOD in Oman and Feasibility Study for upgrading of the electricity supply network for the Kuwait
Oil Company. Feasibility study and preliminary design for upgrading of the distribution on the
island of Majuro, Micronesia.
Responsible for the planning and operation of the ESCOM Eastern Cape, Border and Orange
River Undertakings in South Africa, comprising 400kV, 220kV, 132kV, 33kV & 11kV transmission
& distribution lines and substations.
POWER STATIONS
Supervised the installation and later, maintenance, of standby gas turbine plant on the Zambian
Copperbelt and on the island of Truk in Micronesia. Undertook feasibility studies and preliminary
design of diesel power plants in Majuro and Palau and the specification of smaller standby
generation on a variety of projects.
INDUSTRIAL INSTALLATIONS
Responsible for the specification and design of machinery for a number of bascule bridges, RORO link spans and lock gates in the UK.

BUILDING SERVICES & INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES
Undertaken the design, specification and supervision of building services for office buildings,
schools and recreation facilities including; power supply, heating & ventilation, lighting, fire alarms,
access control etc. Projects include a new Command and Control Centre for Manchester Fire
Brigade, ferry terminal buildings in Belfast and Holyhead, 4500m² assembly building for Toyota,
Burnaston, Derby.
Infrastructure works include services for development sites for British Aerospace Park,
Farnborough, and housing developments East Cowes, Isle of Wight and Woolston, Southampton.

James Davies has worked as an EXPERT WITNESS/EXPERT ADVISER for more than twenty
years. His clients include British and international firms pursuing or defending claims. He has
carried out numerous investigations, prepared engineer’s reports and has contributed to the outof-court settlement of many actions.
He has also presented expert testimony in court. He has received training in the CIVIL
PROCEDURE RULES and their requirements for acting as a SINGLE JOINT EXPERT.

Professional assistance to Toshiba International Ltd with
Assuit 220/33kV substation and thermal power plant for the
Egyptian Electricity Authority including control and protection
systems, earthing and cable schedules.

Feasibility study for the Republic of the Marshall Islands,
Micronesia, including survey and reporting on the existing
power system with recommendations for future development
for the Marshall Energy Company. Following the installation
of a reliable medium speed diesel powered power station
and a 15% annual increase in peak demand the upgrading
of the power system was essential and received the
personal attention of President Kabua. The study included
load monitoring and forecasting, system studies with costed
recommendations for staged reinforcement over a 10 year
period including recommendations on metering, billing and
maintenance.

Investigation, report and implementation of transmission
requirements for the Republic of Palau, to interconnect a
new 6MW diesel station comprising 4 x 3.5MW medium
speed diesel engine generators to the existing power station
in Koror. Study included negotiations with Chinese
Government for the construction of the power lines and
associated substations with associated finance.

Outline specification and design scrutiny of PLC-based
control, indication and alarm system, emergency generator
and signalling systems for twin sector lock gates, Port Solent
Marina.

Installation and operating check on lock gates and bascule
bridge control and indication system, standby generation
and signalling system for Chatham Maritime, Chatham.
The planning and implementation of emergency generation
facilities on the island of Truk the work also included
engineering of a tank farm and auxiliary services and
installation, commissioning and operation of a 3.5MW
Ruston TB 5000 gas turbine set to supplement the island
power supply.
The study of alternative methods of power supply to
neighbouring islands in the Truk Lagoon including the use of
undersea cables.

21 Gendarmerie complexes in Algeria including
interconnection with the National Power System and the
installation of emergency generation plant.

Design scrutiny for a major irrigation and generation project at
Bakolori, North West Nigeria, on behalf of Sir M McDonald &
Partners, Cambridge. The scheme comprised 9MW of hydro
generation, a 10MW diesel generating station and 100km of
33kV and 66kV distribution lines with associated stepdown
substations supplying drainage and pumping station loads.

Design of power supplies for a 600 tonne per day refuse
treatment and transit station for the Greater Manchester
Council.
Route survey for 341km of 33kV transmission lines in the
Port Harcourt area of Nigeria on behalf of Drake & Scull
International.
System Planning and Operations Engineer, Border & Eastern
Undertaking, ESCOM South Africa.
Responsible for the operation of an extension to the region's
electrical system and associated services comprising 220kV,
132kV and 11kV substations and networks, 107.5MW steam
generating stations and 3 x 57MW gas turbine generators during
a period of exceptional expansion. The development included the
establishment of a modern control facility for the centralised
operation of the system. Responsibilities included the preparation
of annual load forecasts, planning and budget proposals.
1971-1973
Senior Project Engineer, Anglo American Corporation, Zambia.
Assessment of computerised network design, preparation of
annual planning reports and capital budgets, specification and
procurement of 220kV and 66kV transmission lines and
substations and 11kV distribution systems. Other responsibilities
included liaison with clients to provide supplies and reinforce
power interconnections between the major copper mines on a
system with approximately 600MW demand.
1965-1971
