This district, about 20 miles by 40 miles, is the part of county Cork north of the Blackwater River, containing the towns of Liscarroll, Kanturk, Buttevant, Mallow, Charleville, Doneraile Fermoy, Churchtown, Kilworth, Brigown, and Mitchelstown. About half of the total recommendations and petitions of ditressed families were from this district, and the others were from places as widely separated as western Kerry, northern Clare and Tipperary, and eastern Wicklow and Wexford. The Peter Robinson Settlers The voyage time was half that of the 1823 emigrants, with 31 days being the longext time at sea. Nevertheless, a number of people died during the ocean crossing, and others died soon after their arrival on dry land. The ships docked at Quebec City at the end of June. The newcomers traveled by steamer to Montreal, then overland to Lachine where bateaux were waiting to transport then to Prescott. From there they proceeded to Kingston. At Kingston, the people stayed in a tent village awaiting the arrival of Robinson, who had returned to Canada by another route. WHY THE IRISH CAME TO PETERBOROUGH In 1822 the British parliament voted 30,000 pounds to finance a large and experimental emigration plan to transport poor Irish families to Upper Canada. Economic conditions in Ireland played a part in forming the plan. Ireland in the 1820's was an economic "basket case". The value of Irish goods was low, potato crops were meager (the Irish Potato Famine was still decades away however) and population in Ireland was increasing dramatically. Parliament was also intent on increasing the number of settlers available to defend the border of British North America (Canada) from the United States. Men in these Irish families could help form the basis of a militia if border disputes flared up. Religious factors also motivated Irish people to venture into the unknown and settle in the "New World". Irish penal laws severely restricted the ability of Irish Roman Catholics to practice their faith, own land or even vote in elections. Peter Robinson, the son of Loyalists and elder brother of Upper Canada's powerful Attorney General, John Beverley Robinson, was asked to manage this emigration scheme in 1822. At the time he was a politican living in York (later Toronto). He sailed for Britain and began forming a workable emigration plan and recruitment programme. He promoted the scheme in southern Ireland (see portion of broadside, above) and some 50,000 people applied to start new lives in a strange and distant land. THE FIRST WAVE OF SETTLERS - BATHURST DISTRICT In 1823 the first wave of Irish settlers (568 people) began the long and dangerous journey to Upper Canada with their final destination in eastern Ontario (Lanark, Perth, Ramsay township area). Two sailing ships - the "Hebe" and "Stakesby" carried settlers in cramped and dank quarters although nothing like the notorious "coffin ships" that carried thousands to North America during the potato famine of the 1840's. The ships landed at Quebec City and the passengers boarded steamships, then barges, then wagons for the final leg. Settlers were given free provisions, tools and farm land! THE SECOND WAVE - PETERBOROUGH! The second wave of emigration was launched in 1825. This time over 2000 people made a journey similar to the first one. This time however, the final destination was Peterborough, in the Newcastle District (south central Ontario). Nine ships carried the passengers on this trip. Before Robinson started the voyage he travelled to the Peterborough area himself to explore conditions, establish a safe travel route and inspect land. Peterborough at this time was a remote and rugged place with a small population. The area was transformed with the sudden influx of 2000 men, women and children in 1825! As in 1823, thousands applied for the voyage leaving from Cork. Prospective settlers had to secure "letters of recommendation" outlining their qualities and usefulness as settlers. Those selected received "embarkation certificates" allowing them to board a particular ship. Again, the ships arrived at Quebec (June 1825). Settlers were loaded onto steamships for a trip down the St Lawrence River and Lake Ontario to Cobourg. After a rough land trip to Rice Lake, the settlers made the final leg of their journey to Peterborough by barge up the Otonabee River (a 24 mile river trip). At Peterborough, families were issued free provisions, tools, livestock and farm land. Life was hard for these people. Several died in the years immediately following the emigration. Some families were given poor farm land and had to relocate and of course, the unforgiving Canadian winters were a challenge. In May of 1825, nine ships set sail from Cork Harbour laden with 2024 emigrants, 385 were men, 325 women, 726 male children under 21, and 588 female children under 21, or 710 adults and 1314 children under 21 years of age. The nine transports sailed in the following order. May 10th, 1825: Fortitude, with 282 settlers, Resolution, with 227 settlers May 13th, 1825: Star, with 214 settlers May 18th, 1825: Elizabeth, with 210 settlers May 11th, 1825: Albion, with 191 settlers, Brunswick, with 343 settlers May 16th, 1825: Amity, with 147 settlers, Regulus, 157 settlers May 25th, 1825: John Barry, with 253 settlers The group did not arrive at Scott's Plains, the present site of Peterborough, until the fall of 1825. Once at Scott's Plains, the emigrants were given their allotment of 100 acres for each head of family and each male child over eighteen years of age. The families were divided by townships as follows: Emily 142, Ennismore 67, Douro 60, Otonabee 51, Asphodel 36, Smith 34, Ops 7 and Marmora 6, with a few families going relatives from the first Robinson emigration of 1823. 20020131 The Stakesby, August 7, 1823 There are two lists, one apparently made when people arrived on board and another on Aug 7, 1823. The first list divides the passengers into 43 groups of three to eight persons each. Families are more or less, but not always together. This grouping seems to be for the purpose of measuring the daily food allowance. The list presented here is based on the second list. embarked on board of the Stakesby transport for passage to Quebec Cove of Cork July 8th 1823 From Ontario Archives, Peter Robinson Papers, F61, MS-12, Reel#2 Located on the east half of Lot 1, con. 10, Ramsay Former residence Adare, Limerick John Young, 41, Katharine [Kelly] Young, 39 Rachel Young, 19, Margaret Young, 18, Lelitia Young, 17, Dorah Young, 15 Katharine Young, 13 - (Katrin) m. Jim Grochowski, MD, in London, Ontario British Museum extracts of wills 1809 -Ally Young alias Barrington, Newport, Tipp "Burlington Free Press" 1893 James McMullen, one of Chicago's oldest lumbermen, and brother of the late Bishop John McMullen, of Davenport, Iowa, died at his residence in this city on Tuesday evening, February 21. He had suffered from liver complaint for some years, indeed, to such an extent that nine years ago he was forced to retire from the business in which he had been active for so many years. Several weeks ago the physicians abandoned hope of saving his life, and his last days were devoted to pious preparation for death. His death bed was an edifying one, and he died surrounded by the members of his family. The funeral took place on Friday at 10 o'clock at St. Patrick's church, Adams and Desplaines streets. the services were simple, in accordance with his wishes. High Mass was said by Dr. Butler assisted by Dr. McGovern and Rev. Father Henneberry. The choir of the church rendered the music. The sermon was delivered by Rev. D.J. Riordan and was a touching eulogy of the life of the deceased. After the services the pall bearers, James McMullen, John T. McLaughlin, William McLaughlin, and John W. Young, who were nephews of the deceased carried the casket to the hearse. The honorary pall bearers, W. J. Amberg, Z.P. Brosseau, Dr. T. A. Lilly, J. Biedler, Joseph Kenny, John Adams, John Coughlin, and R.C. Gannon. The buriel was at Calvary, where a short service was held. Mr. McMullen was widely known in business and Catholic Church circles in this city. A resident of this city for fifty years, he won for himself and enviable reputation for business ability, probity and high Christian character. In church circles he was known as a liberal giver to the poor, a devout Christian and the staunch friend and advisor of the clergy. For a number of years he was president of the Upper Council of St. Vincent de Paul Society. ******** "Chicago Post" 1893 - DEATH OF JAMES MCMULLEN A Veteran Lumber Dealer and Highly Respected Citizen. James McMullen, one of Chicago's oldest lumbermen and brother of the late Bishop John McMullen, of Davenport, Iowa, died at his residence, Jackson Boulevard and Center Avenue, last night. For six months past he had suffered greatly from liver and kidney trouble, which had troubled him more or less of late years, and which nine years ago compelled him to retire from active business. Several weeks ago the physicians were forced to admit that there was no longer any hope of saving the veteran lumberman's life, and the last days were devoted to preparing for the sad end that was sure to come. Surrounded by the members of his family and his spiritual adviser, Mr. McMullen breathed his last shortly after 7 o'clock last night. the funeral will not take place until Friday at 10 o'clock. The remains will be taken to St. Patrick's Church, where requiem high mass will be celebrated, after which the body will be interred at Calvary. Mr. McMullen was widely known in business and Catholic Church circles in this city. A resident of this city for fifty years, he won for himself an enviable reputation for business ability, probity and high Christian character. In church circles he was known as a liberal giver to the poor, a devout Christian and the stanch friend and adviser of the clergy. For a number of years he was president of the upper council of St. Vincent De Paul Society, a charity organization connected with the Catholic Church. While Bishop McMullen was vicar general of this parish, Mr. McMullen was a frequent visitor at the archbishop's residence. Mr. McMullen was born in Ballingshinch, County Down, Ireland, in 1828. In 1833 his parents emigrated to Halifax, removing shortly thereafter to Prescott, Ontario, where they began farming. In 1837, their house was burned down and the family crossed the Canada border to Ogdenburg, N.Y. In 1843 the family came to Chicago and owned a small grocery store. Young McMullen secured work in a lumber hyard packing shingles. He afterward became a clerk for Alexander Officer. He formed a partnership with John funk and Joseph Beidler under the firm name of McMullen, Funk & Beidler. Shortly after the close of the was the firm was dissolved and the firm of McMullen & Officer was organized. This firm continued until about two years before Mr. McMullen retired from business. Mr. McMullen's first lumber yard was located on Canal Street, between Randolph and Lake. It was afterward located in the lumber district at Main and Cologne streets. The deceased leaves a widow and six children and a brother, Joseph McMullen, of this city and a sister, Mrs. William Carey, of Florida. ******* Chicago Herald 1893 - Funeral of James McMullen The funeral of James McMullen took place yesterday morning at St. Patrick's church, West Adams and Desplaines streets. (his first wife). He was a sawyer and millright and in the late 1880`s he and his younger half-brother Samuel came to what would be known later as Danford Village. They were lured to the area by the large virgin pine that abounded in the Gatineau at that time. The YOUNG brothers had lived for a time in the Sangster area prior to moving to Danford. On Nov., 12, 1895 John married Jane CUTHBERTSON, the dtr. of Lewis CUTHBERTON and Elizabeth REID, of Lanark, Ont. No family. There were no houses in Danford when John and Sam arrived. John built the first house, located across the Street from the Presbyterian (United) Church. Later tenants were: Fred and Tory PRESLEY, Celima Joe FRASER, Beattie and Andy KNOX. The property was acquired by Sam and Phyllis MOLYNEAUX who demolished the house in 1990. Although a Roman Catholic, John is buried in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Danford. Before her death Jane was cared for by Tom HOWARD. (she had an a ailment that resembled Alzheimer`s Disease). Danford Lake, Pontiac County, Que., THE LATE MR. YOUNG May 12, 1911 Deep regret has been felt here at the sudden and accidental death of one of Danford Lake's prominent members, in the person of Mr. Samuel Young, who met a sad end in his saw mill here on Thursday evening, April 27. One of the belts in the lower part of the mill came off and Mr. Younge went down to put it on, and in doing so it is thought that he reached over a spindle which was then revolving at a great rate of speed and from which a small bolt was projecting out a very short distance. It is believed that this bolt caught in his clothing and he was carried round on the spindle, his head striking a plank that lay on the floor each time that he was carried round. Mr. H. Lummis, who was measuring lumber, saw there was something wrong and ran inside. All he could see was a cloud of saw-dust whirling round the spindle, and he hurried to the engine room and shut off the steam, and although only a few seconds had elapsed from the time the accident was noticed till the mill was stopped yet it was too late to save the life of the poor victim. When the workmen picked his up, life was already extinct. Dr. C.M. Gordon was summoned at once by 'phone and everything done that possibly could be done under the circumstances but of no avail. The funeral took place on April 29th at 2 o'clock, the funeral service being conducted in the Anglican church by Rev. G.H. Gagnon, assisted by Rev. A. Allan of River Desert. Many of the friends and neighbors were in attendance and the service was a very impressive one. Much praise is due Mr. H. Lummis for the able way in which he conducted every detail in connection with the funeral, in the absence of the undertaker, who was ill. The late Mr. Young was fifty-two years of age and was a very quiet, inoffensive man. His home was in Sangster, Ont., but about sixteen years ago he moved to Danford Lake where he has since resided. He leaves a wife, two sons and six daughters, also an aged father, sever sisters and two brothers. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. Danford Village YOUNG - ADE Samuel YOUNG, b. Sept. 8, 1858, at Bedford, near Kingston, Ont. d. Apr. 27, 1916, was the son of James YOUNG, a Schoolmaster of Cork, Ireland, and Rachael REYNOLDS, his second wife, of Swansea, Wales. (James` first wife was also from Ireland. She gave birth to John and Liza but died shortly afterwords.) Samuel m. Elizabeth Susan Rich ADE, b. July 14, 1861, d. June 5, 1923, dau. of Charles ADE and Elizabeth RICH. (Susan`s maternal Grandmother was a HYDE). Her parents came from Wilmonton, England, to farm in Bristol, Que. The Bristol Iron Mines were discovered, partly on Susan`s brother James ADE`s farm and partly on their neighbor, Mr. KILROY`s property. Sam and Susan lived in Bristol Mines and in Sangster, Que., where the first four of their eight children were born. In the late 1880`s, Sam, a sawyer, and his older, half-brother, John, came to what would later become known as the Village of Danford, lured there by the tall, virgin pine that were so abundant in the area. John had erected the first house in the area in 1888 and Sam built the second house, located "around the bend in the creek" on the Western outskirts of the future village. Four more children were born to Sam and Susan in their new house. [The property subsequently was owned by Jim MILFORD and Clara ROGAN, Elija PECK and Vera McLELLAND and later on by Jim ANDERSON and Ray MILFORD. The current owners are Ricky MERRIFIELD and his wife, Cindy PECK]. In 1896, Sam built and operated Danford`s first sawmill. It was located on the shore of the Kazabazua Creek (where Mason MILFORD later built his house). Sam was accidentally killed in his Mill. (see Obit.) Much of the lumber for Danford`s first Anglican Church,Holy Trinity, was donated by Sam YOUNG. Two of the YOUNG dauters, Nell and Millie, recalls that their Father brought a Scottish orphan, Sam LOUGHHEED (or LOCKHEED) home and told his wife that "there was always room for another Sam". They raised the boy, who grew up and become an Anglican Minister, serving in Moose Jaw, Sask. (Susan ADE`s sibblings were: Big Tom, a lineman for Ottawa Electric; James (Maggie SPARLING); Charles; Betsy (Bessie) (A. TYLER). She was a Nurse in Calif,; Rose (Joe GLENN); Mary ? (Mr. SMITH) [Mary may not belong here]. The Montreal Harbour Commission funded and carried out the first major dredging of the port and St. Lawrence River — a project that started in 1851 and continued until 1888. John Young, considered by many as the father of the Port of Montreal, was responsible for having the channel dredged so that oceangoing vessels could sail to Montreal. Regarded as one of its most important developers, John Young played a major role in the Port of Montreal from 1850 until his death in 1878. He was president of the Montreal Harbour Commissioners for 15 years. In addition to overseeing the channel deepening, John Young was responsible for the construction of port facilities that rivaled or surpassed those of commercial centres overseas. The deepening of the channel permitted steamships to sail upriver to Montreal and by 1856 the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company, which later became part of Allan Line, had already started a regular steamship service to Liverpool. Dr. Young got national attention in 1949, when he assisted in exposing a death march of horses from Rocky Island Lake to The?salon, in which 35 of 70 animals died. He examined the surviving beasts and found them beaten with clubs and wire whips, and emaciated with starvation. His jobs over the year were legion, but most unusual of all was that of the medical advisor to two moose who were captured and broken into harness at Chelmsford a number of years ago. For two seasons they were a special attraction at the harness track there. In recent years, Dr. Young's livery stables were gradually taken over by others, as the demand for horses declined, and machinery took the place of the animals. One phase of Dr. Sudbury Star Oct.15, 195? - Pioneer Northern Young's career was over in 1945 when he sold the last of his Veterinarian Dies at 86 stables on King Street, but he maintained his large practice. He was pre-deceased by his wife, the former Mary Ann Veteran Sudbury horse dealer and veterinary surgeon, Dr. Wood, in 1945. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James Thomas Craig Young, 86, died this morning at Pioneer Coupland (Jean) of Ottawa, and Kathleen (Kitty) Young, of Manor, following a brief illness. The body is at Jackson and Sudbury; a son Jack of Auror Gold Mines, Timmins, nine Barnard Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are not yet grandchildren, one great grandson, and a brother, Dr. David complete. Young, of Durham, Ont. Dr. Young at 85 had the distinction of being Canada's oldest practicing veterinarian, and it was only three years ago that he retired completely from the work he loved so well. He had examined more than 100,000 horses during his long career. "Doc" Young arrived in Sudbury to find 8,000 humans and 200 horses in the immediate area, in lumber camps and on settler's farms. It was here that Doc Young developed and raced two of the best harness horses of their day, which was before and during the First Great War, gaining international repute for his racing in Columbus Ohio, and Dexter Park, Detroit. Of slight stature, "Doc" Young was noted for his agility and energy even to the time of his death. He was known the length and breadth of Northern Ontario, earning his fame as a judge of horseflesh. Twenty year ago, his right hand was smashed when he was dragged along an icy road near Skead by his dog team. He had been on his way to attend a sick horse in a bush camp when his huskies got away from him. James Young operated Young’s Hotel in Braeside Sand Point During the early days, he operated large stables on Larch in McNab Township St. and stables on the corner of King and Clinton Sts. For more than 35 years. Evidence that the love of horses was in his blood, as a small child, is the fact that both his brothers chose the same profession. BORN IN PONTIAC Dr. Young was born in 1872, in the little town of Pontiac, Que., where his father, the late John Young, had a small farm. He was only 19 when he graduated in 1892 from the Toronto College of Veterinary Surgeons. Shortly after, he settled in Cobden, near Pembroke, and operated a livery barn and stables, and his own practice. Dr. Allan McLelland, a cousin, came to Sudbury in 1908 to set up a veterinary practice, and was killed in the Spanish river Railway wreck of 1910, when the bridge over the river collapsed and 29 persons died. The lumbermen wrote Dr. Young and asked him to take his cousin's place and he Young Families of Western Ireland or Eastern Ontario 18 Other Young Families Alexander Young 1741Apr20Bassendean Labourer Son John Young was an agricultural labourer at Herndean, East Bassendean in Westruther & Heatheryhall = Phillis Grant bz1765Oct6Shiels Family of John & Phillis Young Alexander Young James Young Thomas Young 1798May31Hexpath BerwickshireScotland 1846Jun24Georgetown Que Labourer in Broomhill, Hexpath, East Gordon, Langcroft, Berwickshire Scotland; Farmer in Georgetown Que, clerk in Montreal=Margaret Henderson c1800 1853Aug31 mScotland 2nd Generation bz1792Dec15Horndean bz1794Nov25Earnston Catherine Young c1821 1865Apr21Montreal Phillis Young c1823 1888Nov25English RiverQue =William Currie 1813 LockwinockScotland 1884May4Riverfield Que Farmer John Foster Young c1824Broomhill Scotland 1896Oct11Ottawa =Letitia Little 1819Ireland 1890Jan19Ottawa John Young c1769 c1846 = Phillis Grant James Young 1771Apr8Westruther Thomas Young 1773Feb7Westruther Jean Young 1775Feb12Westruther Alexander Young 1776Feb3diedYoung m1768July21Berwickshire Margaret Young 1777Dec24Channelkirk Their family Betty Young 1780Jan16Channelkirk Alexander Young 1784Nov4Channelkirk Alexander’s Siblings John 1734Jun16died Thomas bz1736Apr19 John 1738Sep5 Jean 1743Dec7 James 1746Mar5 Christian 1748Jul24 3rd Generation 1821Feb17Bassendean 1821Dec12Bassendean =Foster Donaldson 1815 1862Oct13Montreal Thomas Currie Margaret Kerr Currie 1845Aug26 1931Jan20 Georgetown William Henderson Currie MillOwner 1847Aug15HowickQue 1890Feb21Ormestown Mary Currie 1849Sep7 1873Jan3Georgetown Spouse 4th Generation Spouse 1843Apr19HowickQue Robert Robertson 1841May5 1907Nov16 farmer Lizzie Carmichael 1845 William Gruer c1840 1918Feb13 1952Aug5 Catherine Currie 1852May23Georgetown 1931July9Georgetown John Currie 1855Feb28 HowickQue 1929Mar13 James Currie 1857Sep16HowickQue 1906Sep6EnglishRiver Agnes Phillis Currie 1862Jul9Georgetown Que 1947Nov1 Archibald Peddie c1848 1897Dec19Georgetown farmer William Gruer c1869 Robert Gruer Arthur Gruer John James Peddie 1880 1968July6 dairyFarmer William Archie Peddie 1883 1960 William T. Notes for PATIENCE YOUNG: Ottawa Public Library: Metcalfe Street, Ottawa, Ontario The Ottawa Journal Thursday, October 3, 1907 FOUND DEAD IN HER BED Miss Patience Young, of Queen St., Hintonburg. WAS NEARLY EIGHTY YEARS OF AGE. Death Due to Natural Causes. Leaves Two Nephews in Hintonburg. Miss Patience Young, an aged lady living alone at 13 Queen street, Hintonburg, was found dead in bed yesterday afternnon by her nephew, Wm. Young, and Constable Graham, of Hintonburg. The old lady had visited at a Mrs. Cockland's on the same street as she lived the night before and the last person who saw her alive probably was George Cockland, a boy who went home with her about nine that night. Next morning it was noticed she was not up when the boy who generally leaves the milk called with it, though she is generally an early riser. In the afternoon Mrs. William Young, who was related to her, also noticed that the door was locked. Thinking this strange Mr. Young notified Constable Graham. He came there and getting into the house and going up stairs they found the old women lying on a bed dead. She had not been in very good health lately and as she is between 75 and 80 years of age there is nothing remarkable in her sudden death. Coroner Baptie was summoned and made enquiries; but it is unlikely that there will be any inquest as there is apparently nothing to point to there having been any neglect or foul play. The deceased leaves one brother, William Young, of Goulbourne, a half brother, Thomas Young, of Maniwaki; two half sisters, Mrs. Geo. Graham of Florence, and Mrs. Joseph Dawson. William Young and Joseph Young of Hintonburg, are nephews of the deceased. Notes for ANN WILSON:Ottawa Public Library: The Ottawa Journal December 1, 1899 SAD AND TRAGIC Mrs. Wm. Young of Ashton Drops Suddenly Dead After a Party. A sad and tragic death was that of Mrs. William Young, of Ashton, a couple of days ago. Mr. & Mrs. Young had been out spending the evening at the residence of Mr, & Mrs. Featherstone, in the village. They returned home about eleven o'clock. Mrs. Young was sitting on the edge of her bed preparing to retire. She stooped over the unlace her boot. Suddenly she exclaimed, "I feel a terrible pain in my breast that will finish me." So saying, she dropped back--dead. The sad fatality had cast a gloom over the whole village.
