Reviews of Jazz: A Century of Change:
Stephen Kelly of Carleton College, MLA Notes, June 1999, Vol. 55 Issue 4, p944, writes that Porter
is one of the scholars who "brought to the field of jazz history new standards of scholarly and
analytical rigor. …a fine collection of interesting readings, with commentary by an intelligent,
reasoned, and openminded guide…it allows the reader to benefit from Porter's considerable
insight…Porter knows what issues might spark interest among students, and he introduces them with
just the right amount of guidance while still leaving room for differences of opinion. Especially
valuable are the excerpts he has included from African American newspapers and periodicals….[A]
valuable addition to the resources in jazz history."
Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times, May 15, 1998, wrote that “the material is never less than fascinating,
an in-depth view of thoughtful, often scholarly jazz writing…by primarily black writers….a fine
collection of interesting readings, with commentary by an intelligent, reasoned, and openminded guide."
Thomas Owens, Jazz Times, October 1998, wrote that "it is a fine addition to the ever-expanding library
