Progressivism: Where will you put your million dollars?
On January 1, 1900, the United States had a reason to be hopeful. Cities and industries were growing. One
factory owner, Andrew Carnegie, was about to sell his steel company and become the richest man in the world.
Not bad for someone who came from a poor immigrant family from Scotland! If Andrew Carnegie could become
rich, couldn’t anyone?! The United States had just won the Spanish-American War – it was a good time to be
American!
However, not everyone in the country was successful. Consider this:
1. The average salary for American workers was less than $300 a year.
During this time, you were poor if you made less than $600 a year
with a family of six.
2. People worked long hours. In 1900, the average work week was 60
hours. In some factories, it was 70 hours.
3. There was a lot of child labor. In 1900, 26% of boys between 10 and
15 years old were working. For young girls, the number was 10%.
Also, more than half of adult Americans were not allowed to vote. Women
never had the right to vote, and most black men had lost their chance to vote,
especially if they were in the South. Clearly, American had some work to do.
Fortunately, some people tried to make a change. A group of writers called
muckrakers looked at problems and wrote about what they saw. Church leaders,
educators, social workers, and some politicians joined them to try to solve these
problems in America. This movement of change was called Progressivism. This
reform effort lasted about 20 years and influence how three presidents thought –
Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson.
Progressives didn’t solve all problems – not as many people worked to try to end racial segregation and
labor unions were not strengthened. However, some important reforms were made.
Here is your job: imagine it’s a cold day in December, 1913. Your old grandmother, whom you love, asks
you to sit by her bed. She tells you that she is not going to live for very long and wants you to have her money. She
will give you a million dollars, but you have to spend it to help make society better. She tells you that you must
give $600,000 to the reform effort you think needs it the most, $300,000 to the second most important reform
effort, and $100,000 to the third most important cause. Choose three reform efforts from the documents that you
will read next. Then, write an essay explaining where you would put your money. In other words, where will you
put your million dollars?
Background Essay Questions
Directions: Please use complete sentences.
1) When was the Progressive Era?
2) What was the poverty level for a family of 6 in 1900?
3) How much money did workers make in a year, on average, in 1900?
4) What three presidents were in office during the Progressive Era?
5) What were two areas in which Progressives made little or no change?
6) Define these words:
Muckraker:
Progressivism:
Timeline:
1890 – Sequoia National Park created in California
1893 – Colorado gives women the right to vote
1905 – First World Series in Baseball

1906 – Pure Food and Drug Act passes
1912 – Titanic sinks. 1,501 people die.
1920 – 19th Amendment is passed – women have the right to vote
Progressivism: Where will you put your million dollars?
Roosevelt, William Howard Taft y Woodrow Wilson.

Any fool can destroy trees. They cannot run away…It took more than 3,000 years to make
some of the trees in these western woods. God has cared for these trees, saved them from
sickness and weather. But He cannot save them from fools – only the government of the
United States can do that.

The boys working with the coal (carbon) cannot relax…the air is full of coal dust (polvo) and
when he is done with work, he continues to cough up the black dust. When I was visiting,
two boys fell. One was burned and the other one crushed to death. This was in the state of
Pennsylvania, January 6, 1911. The boy who was killed was named Dennis McKee.

Water from the roofs would drip over the meat, and thousands of rats would run on top of
it. The rats were trouble and workers would put poisoned bread out for them; they would
die, and then the rats, bread and meat would go into the machines together.
