For this assignment, you are to write a formal essay on one of the topics listed
below.
As a formal essay, you are to write with the proper essay form: intro, body, and
conclusion, and with proper spelling and grammar.
Don’t forget your strong and clear thesis that unifies your essay. Also remember
proper paragraph form. This will be a five paragraph essay.
Choose one of the following topics:
1. Scout learns many lessons growing up in Maycomb in the 1930’s. Show
how three characters contribute to her maturation.
2. Maycomb is a town that emphasizes respect and respectability.
According to the novel, what is the basis of respect? Use three
respectable characters to prove your theme statement.
3. There are three main types of prejudice that are explored in the novel:
racial prejudice, social prejudice, and fear of the unknown. What effect
does discrimination have on the people of Maycomb?
To prove your points, you are to use a combination of specific examples and
quotations. Remember to use MLA format when citing your quotations as well.
