HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PAPER TO TURNITIN.COM Turnitin.com is an online plagiarism detection program. You will need to create a Turnitin.com user account and your paper must be submitted by the time and date specified in the assignment. Turnitin.com will not accept late assignments. All submissions will be evaluated, but if you submit a paper with a similarity index greater than 10% you will probably receive a zero for the assignment and could possibly be reported to the administration. Turnitin can accept files in the following formats: MS Word, WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF, and plain text. Be sure that you save your paper in one of these formats. 1) First-time users need to create an account: Do this immediately, NOT when your assignment is due 1. Your first and last name should already be input. Enter the title of your paper. 5. Browse for the file you want to upload. When you have found it, double-click on it to upload it. 6. After you have chosen the file to upload, click on the “submit” button. 7. Turnitin will show you a copy of your file. Make sure that this is the file you want to submit. If it is, click on “yes, submit”. 8. You will receive an email confirming that you submitted a paper to Turnitin. This is the ONLY evidence that you submitted your paper on time, and the only evidence we will accept if you later cannot find your paper on Turnitin, so be sure to print out a copy for your records. 9. Turnitin will generate a “similarity index” (plagiarism percentage) that will identify any shared content between your paper and others. It may take Turnitin as little as ten minutes and as much as two days before it calculates this index. Furthermore, it will not calculate a final similarity index until the paper deadline has passed, because it then compares your paper to other papers submitted in Biology 101. 10. If your similarity index is between 0 and 10%, you are good to go. 11. Submit your paper WELL BEFORE the absolute deadline so that if the similarity index is higher than 10%, you have time to revise and resubmit it. 12. Resubmissions can take as much as 48 hours to be processed by Turnitin.com. For this reason, I advise students to submit their papers at least 3 days before the absolute deadline so that they have adequate time to make modifications if need be and resubmit before the class deadline.
