21CCCS Senior Scholarship Offerings – 2014-2015 **Students may submit to multiple scholarship categories. English: Essay Choose a book, play, or poem that has had a profound impact on you and write an essay explaining that impact. Consider the writing, message, themes, and characters of the book. Your essay should be wellwritten, organized, and contain no mechanical errors. Social Studies Scholarship: Prompted Response Respond to one of the prompts below. Be sure to pay attention to the writing domains of organization, style, content, focus, and conventions. Freedom Memorial - Research a major U.S. conflict. Interview 2 people who were directly affected by the conflict. Visit your community's memorial square. Then, create a Freedom Memorial—a 4-5 minute movie/podcast in which you reflect upon how the conflict affected U.S. history, the two people whom you interviewed, and you. Be sure to include photos and music to enhance your presentation. Peace Proposal - The U.S. has played a major role in the tumultuous Arab-Israeli debacle. As the leading U.S. diplomat in the Middle East, you are being charged to recommend two options for peace to settle this acrimonious relationship. Write a 4-5 page research paper or create a 4-5 minute podcast in which you present the history of the debacle and lay out your two options for peace. To really bring a dose of reality to this project, please interview 2 people who are knowledgeable of this challenge and consider what they propose for peace. Economic Meltdown! - In 2008, the U.S. economy nearly collapsed. Why? As an investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal, you are charged with the task of bringing your readers up-to-speed on how the economy nearly crumbled, and how the U.S. government stepped in to rescue it with massive amounts of federal aid. Create a special newspaper edition on this economic recession. Be sure to include photos, commentary from respected economists, and suggestions on how the economy can continue to recover from this economic crisis. Time Magazine's Man/Woman of the Year - Time Magazine has tapped you to select the Man or Woman of the Year. Create an eye-catching front-page cover and a 3-4 page lead article explaining why this man or woman has been selected to be the Time Magazine Man or Woman of the Year. Your selection should be a person who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of mankind— economically, socially, politically, or artistically. You will need to include photos, commentary, and analysis. Cultural Exchange Officer - Secretary of State John Kerry has invited you to create a luxurious reception for Chinese President Xi Jinping and his delegation in preparation of the upcoming Sino-US talks on economics, political concerns, and culture. You will need to research current events in China with regards to economics, political concerns, and culture in order to prepare your staff. Then, you will need to devise the menu to be prepared and served at the state dinner. The menu must draw from the cuisine of China. Before XI Jinping arrives, you will need to distribute the current events report to your staff and send the menu with images and a brief history of the food to the kitchen. The current events report should be 4 pages in length. The menu should be 1 page. PE Scholarship: Paper or Video This scholarship is going to be presented to a student who has shown excellence in the area of athletics and academics. A true student-athlete takes as much pride in his/her academics as in the area of athletics. How has your area of athletics helped you achieve your goals and become a well-rounded individual? Please explain to us, in either a 3-5 minute video or 800-1000 word essay, why you feel that you are deserving of this scholarship. If you choose to select the video, be sure to include a sample of your activity that highlights your achievements. 21CCCS Senior Scholarship Offerings – 2014-2015 Humanities: Essay and Original Artwork Write a 450-550 word essay about an event in history in which art was used as a form of communication, teaching, or sharing between cultures. AND Create your own work on the subject of “Art as Communication Between World Cultures.” You may use any medium of art including but not limited to: Music, Dance, Video, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, and Poetry. *Please note that this is a two-part task. Entries will only be considered if both the essay and an original work of art are submitted. Science: Podcast Recording Research a topic in science and create an informative audio or video podcast. The podcast will be between 2 and 4 minutes long. Your submission will consist of a single audio or video file and a bibliography. Pick one of these options for your podcast: -Conduct your own experiment and share the process and results in a podcast -Conduct scholarly research on any science topic and record an educational podcast -Report on a scientific theory from the perspective of the scientist who created the theory -Pose as a news reporter. Report on a local, national or international issue in science. We will be looking for proof of scientific thinking, and a project length that does not exceed four minutes. Math: Presentation or Paper Make a brief presentation, no more than 5 minutes, or write a 3- to 5-page paper describing a new app that you would like to create and the process you must follow to develop and implement it.
