Act III - Major Events
1. In the Senate chamber, the senators gather around Caesar as Metellus Cimber petitions Caesar to lift his
brother's banishment order. Caesar refuses and Casca is the first to stab Caesar.
2. Mark Antony pretends to treat Caesar's murderers as friends. He asks to speak at Caesar's funeral.
3. Against Cassius’ wishes, Brutus agrees to let Antony speak at Caesar’s funeral.
4. Mark Antony reveals his true hatred for the conspirators.
1. Brutus and Cassius are the first to speak to the citizens of Rome and explain why they killed Caesar
2. The crowd initially accepts the explanation of Brutus and Cassius until they hear from Antony who
speaks next using the immortal words, "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;"
3. Mark Antony turns the citizens of Rome against Brutus and Cassius by making the citizens feel remorse
for Caesar's cruel death and by bribing then with the news that Caesar's will give each citizen money from
his will. Mark Antony uses this fact to suggest Caesar was great man who should not have been murdered.
4. Brutus and Cassius are forced to flee Rome when the crowd becomes a crazed mob; Brutus
Shakespeare shows his insight into mob mentality when Cinna the poet is mistaken for one of the
conspirators and killed because he has the same name.
Act IV - Major Events
1. Antony, Octavius, and Lepidus meet together as the Triumvirate to plan for ruling Rome.
2. They discuss their enemies.
3. Antony tells Octavius that Brutus and Cassius have raised an army.
1. Cassius rides into camp with his army.
2. Cassius accuses Brutus of making false accusations against him.
3. Brutus suggests they speak inside his tent and not argue in front of the soldiers.
1. Brutus accuses Cassius of taking bribes.
2. Brutus tells Cassius about his wife’s suicide through eating hot coals.
3. Battle Plan A: Cassius wants to force the enemy to come to them at Sardis.
4. Battle Plan B: Brutus wants to March to meet Antony and Octavius at Philippi.
5. Caesar’s ghost appears to Brutus in his tent.
Act V - Major Events
1. Two armies (Antony and Octavius versus Cassius and Brutus) face each other at Philippi.
2. The four generals meet before the battle and trade taunts with each other.
1. Brutus and Cassius’ armies have an initial victory.
2. Brutus orders a quick charge to take advantage of their immediate success.
1. Cassius sends Titinius onto the battlefield to determine if a group of soldiers are friends or foes.
2. Pindarus mistakenly reports that Titinius has been captured and Cassius kills himself.
3. Titinius returns with news of Brutus’ victory and, finding Cassius dead, kills himself.
1. Antony captures Lucilius who pretends to be Brutus
1. Strato holds the sword and Brutus runs on it.
3. Antony and Octavius celebrate their victory and offer amnesty to Brutus’ army.
4. Antony declares Brutus to be “the noblest Roman of all.”
