MUSIC INDUSTRY COLLEGE UNIT: THE PURPOSES OF MUSIC (Term 2) Year 12 Composition Task Name: ___________________________________________________ Year level: ____________ Teacher: Andrew Kennedy Date Due: Tues 7/6/11 Draft Due: Thurs 26/5/11 The Task You are to choose one of the following two composition tasks and present in either audio/video or written format. 1) A piece of music suitable for film, television or advertising. This would usually involve answering a brief from the director or producer to compose music that would be an integral part of a film, television show or advertisement (eg: Action music for car chase scene). You should include a short (and fictitious) written brief and describe how you have manipulated the musical elements to fulfil it. 2) Your own original composition that could justifiably be promoted for syncing in film, television or advertising. This would usually involve composing a song or piece in a style of your choosing and then submitting it to various syncing organisations who supply music to the film industry. You should provide a written elevator pitch for a sync application describing your composition and what it could be used for in film, television or advertising (eg: song for twilight soundtrack, happy rock song for Channel 10 summer promo ads). It is recommended that you edit the recording of your music alongside suitable video footage. Assessment Conditions All compositions to be presented as audio, video or written score (handwritten or computer generated). A minimum of 32 bars or approximately one minute in length The composer (you) is not required to perform the composition themselves. You may compose in a group situation. However, each group member must participate equally and provide further written documentation describing exactly what they contributed to the composition. Each group member must submit an individual task sheet and recording etc. In completing your composition, you should aim to: Demonstrate use of the elements of music Write within the technical capabilities of the sound sources Ensure that the idiomatic conventions relevant to the style are adhered to while demonstrating your own style of composition Demonstrate a balance of contrast, unity and variety Assessment Criterion You will be assessed according to the following standards for composing. Standard A The student: Skillfully manipulates musical elements and compositional devices to create cohesive music that is within a context, relates to genre and effectively and convincingly expresses style. Standard B The student: Manipulates musical elements and compositional devices to create mostly cohesive music that is within a context, relates to genre and effectively expresses style Standard C The student: Combines musical elements and compositional devices to create partially cohesive music that is within a context and shows evidence of genre and style.
