Lesson 2: Discussion from H/W: List the personalities on the board along with drugs and punishment. Were the athletes wrong to take the drug? Were the punishments right? In table groups, have to draw up a table of the possible advantages/disadvantages of taking the following: Anabolic steroids Diuretics Blood doping Beta-blockers Stimulants Narcotic analgesics Peptide hormones ie HGH Draw chart on the board to copy. EXT: The Chinese swimming team were accused of drug taking in the 1998 World Championships in Australia, but the team was not banned. The winner of the first snowbaording medal in the Nagamo Winter Olympics was found to have taken social drugs but was allowed to keep his medal. Should the ban be lifted on all drugs in sport? Discuss. Lesson 3: Video: On the juice –Drugs in sport. Watch the video and answer the following questions: 1. List 4 reasons why performance enhancing drugs should not be used by athletes. 2. Why is it difficult to test for HGH? 3. Why is caffines not banned completely? 4. Has out of competition drugs testing been successful? Explain. 5. The penalty for testing positive has recently been reduced from 4 to 2 years. Explain the politics behind this decision. 6. List the reasons why some athletes take banned drugs, which of these is most excusable. Justify your answer. 7. What are the alternatives to taking banned drugs. Lesson 4: Smoking and Alcohol: Copy the facts about smoking and drinking from OHP (P.109 P.E to 16) Answer the following Q’s 1. Why does smoking reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches the muscle. What type of activities would smoking most affect? 2. It is not possible to be a heavy drinker and a top athlete. Explain why. Use P. 31 of text book to help. Lesson 5: Individual Differences in Sport. Brainstorm individual differences should come up with: Fitness components (Strength, flexibility, endurance levels,) flexibility,age, somatotype, physical ability, experience, environment and culture, gender. In table groups need to come up with why/how these factors affect sport, What sports it affects more. Responses to be put on a chart on the board and copied down. H/W Do you think that women are discriminated against in sport when it comes to prize money? Give reasons why this happens along with ideas to bridge the gap between men and women. Lesson 6: Discussion from H/W Worksheet (P.50 Lonsdale revision guide) Recap somatotyping: Draw the 3 different somatotypes (P.58) along with sports they will have more success in. EXT: Choose an invasion game and position. Identify at least one somatotype and explain the advantages that type would have in a particular position. Lesson 7: Fatigue From P. 63 read and take notes on lack of sleep, staleness and fatigue. List in order the signs of fatigue. Choose 1 physical activity and describe how fatigue could affect a performer. What does a coach do when s/he sees a player struggling with fatigue? EXT Discussion: what is the difference between the play of someone who is fatigued and someone who is just bored - cannot be bothered to try ( need to think about the role of motivation here) Lesson 8 & 9: Sport and Technology How is technology used in sport? – Brainstorm Use video to fill out photocopy sheet. H/W Give an example how technology has helped to break a world record. By whom? Distance / time? Lesson 10: Select a sport of your choice and provide 1 example of how technology has impacted on each of these 3 areas: 1. Performance 2. Participation 3.
