1. Why Travel to Disneyland?
If you are familiar with Walt Disney World, you might wonder why anyone would visit Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
After all, Disneyland is small. It covers fewer than 300 acres (including the Hotel properties) while Walt Disney World exceeds
30,000 acres. Walt Disney World has a Magic Kingdom park which is "just like" Disneyland in California. The resorts in
Florida are all themed. In contrast, only the newest resort hotel (the Grand Californian) at Disneyland is...the other two, older hotels are not. So why would anyone want to travel to Disneyland when they can go to Walt Disney World instead?
The answer is really very simple. Walt Disney World began in Anaheim, California. The very ideas, concepts, and inspirations that eventually resulted in the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, the Disney / MGM Studios, the water parks, and the themed resorts of Walt Disney World originated at Disneyland. For the Disney-purist, that reason alone is sufficient reason to travel to California. For the typical tourist, of course, that is probably not a big deal on the surface.

Differences define our world. They bounce recklessly back and forth in the American consciousness, creating a fog of confusion in which we all get lost. In an ideal world, difference wouldn't matter. Yet our world is far from ideal, and so we must confront difference, regardless of how painful and complicated this confrontation can be. Difference is difficult and is often used to overpower and abuse. It is a maze, though, in which we must explore if we are to ever find our way to understanding. Dorothy faced a lot of trouble along the yellow brick road, but that didn't mean she stopped looking for the Wizard of Oz.

Destruction of Amazon 'slowing'
The government of Brazil says that the destruction of the Amazon rainforest has fallen by 50% this year. It believes this is the result of new protection policies.
Environmental groups warn it is too soon to be sure that there has been a long-term reversal in the decline of the world's largest rainforest.
Marina da Silva, environment minister, said some 3,475 square miles of forest was cut in the last year. This is half the amount in 2003-4.
Environmental groups welcome the news. But they say that the news must be treated with caution.
They say that the figures are still estimates from satellite pictures. Cloud cover can make these pictures inaccurate.
Still, it is good to see that protection policies may be working.

If you throw a straight piece of wood that's about the same size as a boomerang, it will simply keep going in one direction, turning end over end, until gravity pulls it to the ground. So the question is, why does changing the shape of that piece of wood make it stay in the air longer and travel back to you?
The first thing that makes a boomerang different from a regular piece of wood is that it has at least two parts, whereas a straight piece of wood is only one unit. This makes the boomerang spin about a central point, stabilizing its motion as it travels through the air. Non-returning boomerangs are better throwing weapons than straight sticks because of this stabilizing effect: They travel farther and you can aim them with much greater accuracy.
The returning boomerang has specialized parts that make it behave a little differently than an ordinary bent stick.
A classic banana-shaped boomerang is simply two wings joined together in a single unit. This is the key to its odd flight path.

Although Homer wrote both works, The Iliad and The Odyssey provide two remarkably different views on the nature of the
Olympian Gods. Both stories end up sending contrasting messages about the relationship between the gods and humanity, and about life in general. In the Iliad , the inhabitants of Olympus are depicted as treacherous, power-hungry, and are always at each other's throats. A perfect example is when Ares betrays his mother, Hera, and his sister, Athena, by aiding the Trojans instead of the Greeks. When he is discovered, Athena strikes him down in battle through Diomedes. In the Odyssey , however, the Gods of
Olympus display far more unity and civility toward each other. They argue and disagree, but their disagreements are never carried out to the extremes found in the Iliad. When Poseidon punishes Odysseus for blinding the Cyclopes, Athena does not take revenge. Even though Odysseus is her favorite mortal, she respects Poseidon's right to punish him. Also, the treachery among the
Gods seen in the Iliad , is nowhere to be found in the Odyssey .

From A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Once upon a time -- of all the good days in the year, on Christmas Eve -- old Scrooge sat busy in his countinghouse. It was cold, bleak, biting weather: foggy withal: and he could hear the people in the court outside, go wheezing up and down, beating their hands upon their breasts, and stamping their feet upon the pavement stones to warm them.
The city clocks had only just gone three, but it was quite dark already -- it had not been light all day -- and candles were flaring in the windows of the neighboring offices… The fog came pouring in at every chink and keyhole, and was so dense without, that although the court was of the narrowest, the houses opposite were mere phantoms. http://www.kidsnewsroom.org/elmer/infocentral/stories/carol.txt

They were black men who had a dream, but never lived to see it fulfilled. One was a man who spoke out to all humanity, but the world was not yet ready for his peaceful words. "I have a dream, a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed... that all men are created equal." (Martin Luther King, Jr.) The other man spoke of a violent revolution which would bring about dramatic change: "Anything you can think of that you want to change right now, the only way you can do it is with a ballot or a bullet. And if you're not ready to get involved with either one of those, you are satisfied with the status quo. That means we'll have to change you." (Malcolm X)
While Martin Luther King, Jr. promoted non-violence and civil rights, a man by the name of Malcolm X dreamed of social justice "by any means necessary." adapted from http://www.123helpme.com/view.asp?id=23176

I'd like to own a shop that sells shoes. Not any shoes, only men's shoes and even then only certain men's shoes.
My shop would sit neatly between two larger enterprises, standing either side like protective older brothers. It would be on a road with wide pavements and an open, indifferent view - probably in a city somewhere, maybe Edinburgh or even York.
Quiet self-assured quality would surround my shop. Confidence and elegance would ooze out of the door and dance invitingly in front of the shoppers walking by. And those certain men would be caught, entranced by my shop and drawn to admire the carefully-spaced displays in the window. Hand-made soft Italian leather; carefully crafted stitches and individually chosen dyes; the hues and the labels of quality, individuality and exquisite comfort.
