PREAMBLE:
“Physical activity and sport as a lifelong journey is an important philosophy for the
physically educated individual”.
During the last two years you have had the opportunity to shape your views and
beliefs on physical education and the purpose/role it has in your life at present and in
the future. In preparation for this assessment task you will be required to design and
implement a four week training program for Triathlon. The quality of your program
and training will be reflected in your physical response grade. Your involvement in
the training program will also allow you to utilise personal experiences to reshape/consolidate your philosophy on physical activity and sport and its place in your
future lifestyle
This assignment is comprised of two phases:
1. the information gathering phase
2. the task production phase
1. The Information Gathering Phase (4 weeks of learning experiences)
During this phase you will be committed to designing and implementing a 4 week
training program to improve your performance in Triathlon. The training program can
be designed individually, in pairs or as a team. To be successful it should demonstrate
your knowledge of training principles, especially specificity and individuality.
The training program is to:



Be a four week cycle, with a 350m swim, 12km cycle and 3km run to be raced
upon completion.
Include a minimum of 7 training sessions per fortnight; (from weeks two to five
all lessons will be physical training). N.B. Any other physical activity that may
improve your performance should also be included in your training program.
Allow for a training session of 45mins duration (minimum).
These training sessions will provide you with the experiences required for the writing
phase of this assessment item. To construct support for your writing task, you should
write anecdotal notes about each training session. These notes should be about the
aspects of training you liked/disliked, sociological reasons why you may have enjoyed
or didn’t enjoy training and comparison to other sports you have studied.
After completing the training program you must comprehensively evaluate the
effectiveness of the training in meeting your individual needs and expectations that
you normally derive from physical activity and sport.
PLEASE NOTE: The information gathering phase is NOT the assessment item.
This design and implement process is simply a learning experience to
provide you with information and knowledge to underpin the assessment
task. The quality of your program and training will be reflected in your
physical response grade.
2. The Task Production Phase
TASK CONTEXT:
As a year 12 Physical Education student you have had the opportunity to be a
physically educated person by learning in, about, and through physical activity. You
have participated in a variety of sports and had the opportunity to develop: an
appreciation of skilled performance; knowledge to improve or learn new skills, an
understanding how psychological factors can affect performance; physiological
knowledge required to improve physical performance capacities; and an awareness of
how societal factors impact on sports participation.
You are now to compile an essay that reflects on your perception of yourself as a
physically educated person and how your involvement in triathlon has challenged
these perceptions.
TASK:
Compile an essay in an analytical style that: defines what a physically educated
individual is; justifies your claims on your personal status as a physically educated
person; and reflects on how your involvement in an individual endurance sport like
triathlon has impacted on your personal perception of yourself as a physically
educated person and your commitment to sport and physical activity.
TASK GUIDELINES:
The task requires you to investigate and to decision-make.
1. Definitional investigation: Investigate what a physically educated person
is. Your investigation should make clear any confusion you may have on
what a physically educated person is. It should conclude with a list of the
defining characteristics of a physically educated person.
2. Decision making: Using your list of defining characteristics as criteria make
an informed decision about your status as a physically educated person and
your commitment to sports and physical activity.
3. Constructing support: Elaborate on your claim about your status as a
physically educated person by reflecting on the sociological factors (as
explained by Figueroa’s framework) that have influenced your involvement in
physical activity.
4. Constructing support: Complete the training program and gather
anecdotal evidence on different aspects of your training. These notes can
provide the evidence for the next step. Your notes need to elaborate on your
participation or commitment to the training. For example; did you
enjoy/dislike it? Did you under/overestimate your endurance capacities when
planning the training? Do you prefer training as part of a group or
individually?
5. Decision making: Using your notes from the previous step, revisit your
criteria for a physically educated person and reassess how your involvement
in the training program has impacted on your perception of yourself as a
physically educated person and your involvement in sport and physical
activity as part of your lifestyle.
6. Constructing Support: Again elaborate on your conclusions by explaining
how different societal levels as explained by Peter Figueroa have shaped
your attitude to individual endurance sports such as Triathlon.
Your written task is to take the generic structure of an analytical essay that reflects
on your status as a physically educated person and your long term involvement in
sport and physical activity and how different societal factors have influenced your
attitude to sport and physical activity. It should use textual features that strictly
adhere to the conventions of a of a report essay. These include the generic structure;
sophisticated sentence and paragraph structure that aids in the development of
student ideas; vocabulary choice that is sophisticated and reflects a high level of
understanding; and spelling and grammar that is extremely accurate and supports the
conveying ideas.
