National Primary Care Research and Development Centre report, "Evaluation of closer to home demonstration sites" A key government objective in reform of the English National Health Service (NHS) is to move health services from acute hospitals into the community and so bring care closer to home. In 2006, a series of 30 demonstration sites were selected in six specialties: Dermatology, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), General Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Urology. This report summarises the experiences of these demonstration sites from an evaluation carried out between September 2006 and May 2007 by the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre of the University of Manchester and the Health Economics Facility of the University of Birmingham. The evaluation included: interviews with managers and others at all sites; qualitative case studies in 12 sites; economic case studies in 6 sites; and patient questionnaire surveys at all sites.
