SOUTH TUEN MUN GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOL Discipline Team 2009 – 2010 Assembly Speech Title: From discipline to self-discipline Date: 2nd March 2010 Speakers: 6A CHEUNG Hoi Yan, 4D Wu Flora Teacher: Mrs. IP LIU Suk-ching Flora: Sherry: Goodbye, Sherry. I want to quit. I don’t want to be a Discipline Prefect any more. What’s up? Why? Flora: I hate my duties in school. I’m fed up with checking students’ uniform. It's a shame I have to give out written warnings to schoolmates, even my friends and classmates. I myself don’t like punishment! Sherry: Discipline is not the same as punishment. Instead, discipline reminds us to respect the rights of others, what behaviors are acceptable and what are not, with a goal of helping to develop our school a secure and positive learning environment. But … all students are different. How can we make all students observe the same set of school rules? We understand that all students are different and have different Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: temperaments. Therefore, we have to be firm and consistent. This applies to all teachers and prefects. It is normal for naughty students to test their limits. If teachers and we Discipline Prefects are inconsistent in what these limits are, then we encourage misbehaviour. We need the school rules as a guide that keeps our behaviour on track. School rules define the expected standards of clothing, timekeeping and work ethic, etc. Agree. I want the school rules to be integrated into my whole personality, a part of me. When the rules have developed into a part of you, it means you have got hold of a very important personal development tool. What’s that personal development tool you are talking about? It is self-discipline. Self-discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state. Great! But … just like many students, I’m very weak in my level of self-discipline. Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: Flora: Sherry: No worry. Self-discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger you become. Is the training of self-discipline very difficult for us? No, it’s easy. Simply look at where you are now, and aim to get better as you go forward. Sorry, I don’t get it. I’ve got a list of challenges to get you thinking about where you stand right now. Please tell me the list. I love challenges. Listen carefully: 1. How much time do you waste in a typical school day? 2. Do you revision your lesson every day? 3. When was the last time you failed in submitting your homework? ….. Please stop. That’s enough. It’s so embarrassing. I think I’m really weak in self-discipline. At least you know where you are. Now start at where you are and plan what you should do in order to develop better personal qualities. What good personal qualities can I develop if start to train myself self-discipline now? There are many and I just quote a few as examples. They are sensitivity, self-esteem, confidence, ability to focus on goals, wisdom to make right choices, honesty, integrity, others, sense of responsibility, skills to solve problems and desire to learn. So, on one hand, I start my own training of self-discipline. On the other hand, I support my schoolmates in observing the school rules for developing good personal qualities. Absolutely! Our dear fellow students, let’s start our own self-discipline training at where we are and plan what we should do. Now I’m proud of being a Discipline Prefect here. I love my duties in school. Discipline is not punishment. Let’s support each other in self-discipline training. Thank you. Morning Assembly Speech Date : 02.03.2010 Name : Tsui Ka Lam 4A (35) Good morning everyone, I’m Karen Tsui from class 4A. Time flies and the second term has already begun. How do you feel about going back to school after such a long holiday? Did you miss your classmates? I remember that on the 1st Sept, I entered the classroom with fear since I was put in a class with almost all new faces, not to mention knowing each of their names. In the first few days, I felt like a stranger in the class. Finding myself in this awkward situation, I was full of grumbles at the very beginning, having no interest in my classes. After complaining for a few days, I started to understand that I couldn’t keep on doing this but I had to adapt to the environment and change my way of thinking. With a positive attitude, I plucked up my courage to open up, and make every endeavor to get along with my new classmates and integrate with them. Things have changed and now I have a sense of belonging towards my own class and have made some good friends. As we know, sometimes things will not come up to our expectations. It is normal for us to feel lost and puzzled. However, we need to adjust our emotion and think positively. We should not always look on the dark side of things as we will easily feel frustrated and exhausted soon. Instead, it would be better for us to treat the hurdles as an opportunity to challenge ourselves and grow. A person with a positive attitude can have a more enjoyable life. Don’t see your problems as a torture but an amusing game. You will have great fun and learn a lot. You know, a pleasant personality does attract love and friendship. You’ll sure be more well-liked by others and lead a more colorful life. Schoolmates, be more positive and you will find that life is fascinating, full of surprise and fun. I hope all of you can fully enjoy your life and wear a hearty smile every day. Thank you.
