CMPE 296A: Wireless Technology Survey Project in Wireless
Information Service and Mobile Commerce
Instructor: Jerry Gao, Ph.D.
Semester: Spring, 2004
Handed out date: 2/11/2004
Due date: 3/17/2004
Project Objective:
This survey project requires students to conduct a survey project on a selected topic in the areas of wireless
information services and mobile commerce applications, including issues, enabling technologies, and state-of-the-art
solutions. The major purpose of this project is to enable students to understand issues and solutions as well as
technology advances in one of wireless information service and mobile commerce applications. Through this
project, students first learn how to conduct information research, comprehend, and report the state-of-the-art
technologies and advances in one selected area. Then, they need to analyze and compare various technical methods,
solutions, approaches, application systems and products. Finally, they will deliver a technical survey report as the
result of this project.
Project Description:
This project is a team project for 2 or 3 students. It requires students to select one project topic from the given list,
search and collect the related information and technical articles using school libraries, IEEE digital library, ACM
digital library, and Internet. After reading and understanding them, students must analyze and compare them using a
well-defined comparison scheme, and present the information in a well-structured report.
Survey Project Topic list:

A Study of Wireless Instant Messaging
This project requires students to conduct a survey on wireless instant messaging technologies, protocols,
approaches and methods, and systems. The report must answer the following questions:
1. What is wireless instant messaging? (purpose, objectives, advantages, limitations and challenges,
comparisons with existing instant messaging)
2. What are protocols and standards? Discuss and compare these protocols in terms of processes,
architectures, message formats, functional features, and so on.
3. What are the system infrastructures, delivery approaches, technical issues and solutions?
4. Who are the major players? What are their products and technologies?
Your report must answer these questions and present your views and comparisons, and comments.

A Study of Mobile Payment Systems
This project requires students to search and collect the information about current wireless payment systems (or
products). Students must report the various aspects of wireless payment systems to answer the following
questions:
1. What is mobile payment? (objectives, problems, and goals, and challenges)
2. What is the classification of wireless payment systems?
3. What are the systems? (system profile, based-on technologies, system infrastructure and components,
system functional features, and payment processes)
4. What are the basic security methods and solutions are used?
5. What are the basic payment protocols are adopted? (note: some systems may not use any payment
protocols)
6. Compare these systems from different perspectives, business models, applications, customers, security
methods.

A Study and Comparison of Wireless Billing and Payment Protocols
This project requires students to search and collect the information and technical papers discussing wireless
billing and payment protocols. Students must report the various aspects of wireless payment systems to answer
the following questions:
1. What is wireless payment? And what is wireless billing?
2. What is the classification of wireless payment (or billing)?
3. What are wireless payment protocols (or billing protocols)? (protocol profile, processes, communication
interaction scenarios, message formats, error handling, and security)
4. What are the basic security methods and solutions are used?
5. What are their applications? (applications, users, technology, and customers)
6. Compare these protocols from different perspectives, business models, applications, customers, security
methods.

A Study of Mobile Client Environments and Technologies
This project requires students to search and collect the papers and information about various types of wireless
software running environments and technologies for mobile devices. Your report must answer the following
questions:
Your report must cover the following aspects:
1. Classification of the necessary enabling technologies
2. What are the available data services for mobile devices? Compare their strengths and limitations
3. What are the existing messaging services? Compare their pros and cons
4. What are the different browser technologies for mobile devices? (for example, J2ME, WML, cHTML,
xHTML). Compare them.
5. What are the different types of multimedia interfaces or technologies for mobile devices?
6. What are the different types of running environments and related technologies?
7. What are the mobile client frameworks or platforms?
8. What are the existing issues?

A Study of Wireless Multimedia Protocols and Solutions
This project requires students to study the existing wireless multimedia protocols and solutions. Students must
to find the answers to the following questions:
1. Introduction to wireless multimedia? (basic concepts, such as what are wireless multimedia, objectives,
issues, limitations and challenges?)
2. What are the available wireless multimedia protocols? Compare their protocol processes, functions,
message formats, methods,..)
3. What are the basic multimedia algorithms (encoding and decoding….)? Comparing them.
4. What are the available wireless multimedia solutions? (infrastructures, components, functions, ..)
Comparing them.
5. Identified issues, limitations and suggestions

A Study of Wireless Security Problems and Solutions
This project requires students to conduct a survey project on wireless security technologies and solutions to find
the answers to the following questions: (please consult with instructor for the right scope)
1. What are the special problems in wireless systems?(issues, limitations and challenges)
2. What are the solutions to these problems? (security methods, algorithms, techniques, approaches, secure
protocols)
3. Major players which are working on wireless security solutions? (systems, business models, products and
business markets)
Your report must answer these questions and present your views and comparisons, and comments.
