Voice
The essay projects the writer’s distinct
voice; it does not sound stilted or forced.
Surface Issues
The writer should competently employ
standard written American English
grammar, mechanics, and spelling.
The essay should be between 300 and
500 words (a factor only if you’re trying
to decide between two equally good
essays)
The essay should be entirely the
student’s own work, and any use of
another writer’s work or ideas should
be clearly documented.
