For Immediate Release Association for Women in Science, Seattle Chapter, Presents: Award for Scientific Advancement honoring Dr. Anna Wald MD, MPH Professor in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, University of Washington and Award for Excellence in Science Education/Outreach, honoring Dr. Nancy Hutchison PhD, Director, Science Education Partnership, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. We will also be presenting the chapter's 2014 undergraduate scholarship recipients. SEATTLE, WA, Jan 20th 2014—The Seattle chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) will be honoring Dr. Dr. Anna Wald, Professor in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, University of Washington with the 2nd annual Seattle AWIS Award for Scientific Advancement for her outstanding contributions to science. Her research focuses on the epidemiology, natural history and immunobiology of Herpes Simplex Virus infection and her work has led to paradigm-shifting clinical and translational research into the natural history and prevention of genital herpes. This year, Seattle AWIS will also be honoring Dr. Nancy Hutchison, Director of the Science Education Partnership (SEP) Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with the Award for Excellence in Science Education/Outreach. Dr. Hutchison founded the SEP program for secondary school science teachers in Washington State providing teachers with hands-on experience working in labs and helping them develop relevant and research based curriculum for their students. Additionally, the chapter will be awarding its annual undergraduate scholarships. The Seattle AWIS scholarship program was launched in 1990 to provide financial assistance to women majoring in science, math, or engineering fields at four-year colleges and universities in Washington. More than $175,000 in scholarships has been awarded to date. Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic excellence, financial need, motivation to pursue a science-based career, and a record of giving back to their communities. These awards will be presented at the Seattle AWIS Scholarship Fundraiser in June 2014.
