Georgia “Laws of Life” Essay—Assignment Sheet 100 points possible Length: Approximately 500 words (1 ½ pages typed, double-spaced, 12pt. font) First Draft Due: Thursday, Dec. 1 Final Draft Due: Tues. Dec. 6 What Is A Law of Life? It’s an ideal, rule or principle about life that transcends modern times, particular cultures, religions, and ethnic creeds. The Laws of Life are those laws or guidelines that, if practiced by everyone, would benefit us all, and improve the world in which we live. Laws of life are not general topics like “honesty” or “love.” Instead, they are stated as maxims, wise or “pithy” sayings that contain words of truth or lasting meaning. For example, “Honesty is the Best Policy” or “It is better to love than to be loved.” (See other examples on the back of this sheet) The purpose of a Laws of Life essay is to reflect on a truth about life that you have learned. Think about the core values and principles that guide your life. Students often identify their laws of life through their own experiences, lessons they have learned, and the people who have served as living examples. Think about a personal experience that taught you a truth about life. This doesn’t have to be an earth-shattering event, but it should be an event that taught you something—a truth or lesson that you continue to live by.
