INT.
Buchanan’s House – Mid-day
[Gathered around the veranda are friends talking to each
other inaudible. TOM BUCHANAN is talking to the group about
going into town. GATSBY is talking to NICK CARRAWAY. DAISY
is talking to JORDAN]
NICK CARRAWAY (V.O.)
It started as a hot day. We
were very indecisive when
it came down to do
something that day.
[Tom gathers the group attention and proceeds to speak]
TOM BUCHANAN
I have an idea, why don’t we
go into town?
Come on, I’m perfectly
willing to go into town.
[All faces turn towards Tom staring looking dumbfounded]
TOM BUCHANAN (CONT’D)
What’s the matter with you
guys, let’s go into town.
[Group MUTTERS in agreement. Jordan and Daisy go away and
left standing is Nick, Gatsby and Tom. There is an awkward
silence in the room. Then hesitant to speak Tom makes a
notion with his head then speaks]
TOM BUCHANAN
I don’t see the idea of going
into town. I mean you guys
suggested it. Women get these
notions in their heads[Daisy yells from the other room]
3
DAISY BUCHANAN
Shall we get anything to
drink? A woman needs to clean
her throat.
[Tom turns to Gatsby and Nick]
TOM BUCHANAN
I guess I’ll get some
whiskey.
[Leaving the room, Gatsby shows an act of great relief and
turns to Nick]
GATSBY
I can’t say anything is this
house, old sport.
[Daisy runs in]
DAISY
I should’ve done this sooner.
[Daisy kisses Gatsby]
DAISY
We’ll finish this later.
[She hears Tom’s STEPS and then leaves]
GATSBY
She sure is something. I love
her. I love everything about
her, her hair, her eyes, her
everything. Even her voice I
love.
NICK CARRAWAY
She has an indiscreet voice.
It’s full of-
4
GASTBY
Money.
[Tom now walks back with a bottle in hand wrapped in a
towel. Daisy and Jordan are now wearing tight hats and
beautiful clothing]
GASTBY
Since we are all going into
town why don’t we take my
car? It is a new car. I just
bought it yesterday.
TOM
Is it standard shift?
GASTBY
Of course, I only get the
best.
TOM
All right, I’m driving. Let’s
Go.
EXT. OUTSIDE BUCHANAN’S HOUSE NEAR CAR - AFTERNOON
[All walk outside. Tom is now driving the car into town
passing a garage but not stopping. Waving as he passes by
to MYRTLE, Tom’s mistress]
INT. INSIDE THE CAR – AFTERNOON
[The group is now deciding what to do in the city]
GATSBY
What will we do when we get
into town?
5
JORDAN
Those big movies on 50th
street are cool. Why don’t we
go to the movies?
DAISY
No, it’s too hot. We can’t
sit in the car to watch a
movie.
[Tom stops the car to get out and lets Daisy drive.]
TOM
You guys go find out what to
do then come back to pick me
up. I’ll be the one smoking
two cigarettes.
DAISY
Nick and Jordan why don’t you
stay with Tom, he could use
some help around town and you
guys could get a taxi home.
Gatsby and I are going around
town to do some sightseeing.
[Nick, Jordan, and Tom now order a taxi to go home]
INT. INSIDE TAXI CAR – AFTERNOON
TAXI DRIVER
Where to?
TOM
East Egg. Take the main road.
EXT. OUTSIDE THE GARAGE OF GEORGE WILSON’S – AFTERNOON
[Myrtle is runs out into the street]
6
MYRTLE
(Waving her arms back and forth)
STOP!
[Without stopping the car slams head on]
[WILSON is watching helplessly and then calls the cops]
INT. INSIDE TAXI CAR – AFTERNOON
[Tom sees the cops and a woman in front of the garage lying
on the ground. Wilson sees the car pull up and runs away
into the garage locking the door behind him.]
TOM
(to the driver)
Hey, can you stop for a
second?
[Tom gets out of the car and walks towards the body]
EXT. OUTSIDE THE GARAGE OF GEORGE WILSON’S – AFTERNOON
[Tom runs over to her body and weeps]
TOM
Who did this to you!
(weeping)
What happened!?
[Tom now turns to a nearby POLICE WOMAN. She is taking down
names]
TOM
What happened here?! Tell me!
POLICE WOMAN
She was run over.
7
TOM
(sarcastically) No, I didn’t
know.
POLICE WOMAN
Yeah, the car that hit her
didn’t even stop.
TOM
Who told you that?
POLICE WOMAN
The guy who saw the whole
thing.
TOM
Where is he?
POLICE WOMAN
In there.
[She points in the direction of the garage]
[Tom now walks toward the garage and sees a woman next to
the door]
TOM
Where is Wilson?
GIRL 1
He locked himself in.
TOM
(banging on the door)
I know you can hear me. What
color was the car!?
8
WILSON
Blue!
TOM
Gatsby! He killed her!
[Tom now walks away and gets inside the taxi and goes home]
EXT. OUTSIDE GATSBY’S HOUSE – AFTERNOON (next day)
NICK
I need to know what happened
yesterday when Myrtle died.
Please tell me.
GATSBY
All right, you deserve the
truth. I wasn’t driving.
Daisy was. She must’ve found
out about Myrtle and Tom. I
jerked the wheel but then
when I looked back it was too
late. Myrtle just looked like
she wanted to talk. I told
Daisy to slow down but she
wouldn’t listen. She told me
she hated her.
NICK
Wilson probably found out who
killed her. He could think it
was you driving the car.
GATSBY
Maybe from a distance it
might’ve looked like that.
9
NICK
I’m going to see Tom maybe
Wilson talked to him.
[Nick is leaving]
GATSBY
(aside)
Goodbye old sport.
EXT. TOM BUCHANAN’S HOUSE – AFTERNOON
Nick arrives at the house and is confronted by Daisy.
Jordan is behind her.
NICK
Where’s Tom? Was Wilson here?
DAISY
Wilson was here a minute ago.
I overheard them talking
about Gatsby. Wilson thinks
he killed her.
NICK
But it wasJORDAN
Go, now!
EXT. POOLSIDE GATSBY’S HOUSE – AFTERNOON
[Gatsby lies down on the mat that floats in the pool.]
GASTBY (V.O)
Even though I hadn’t used it
all summer, I was going to
take a swim.
10
[Wilson is behind Gatsby and aims]
WILSON
This is for you my love.
[Then he shoots. Then shoots himself]
Two years later
[Nick is walking towards the house]
EXT. FRONT DOOR – AFTERNOON
[Nick opens the door]
[Nick walks in and sees there is letter addressed for him
with a date from two years ago, opening it he reads]
NICK (V.O.)
Dear Mr. Carraway. This has
been one of the most terrible
shocks of my life to me I
hardly can believe it that it
is true at all. Such a mad
act as that man did should
make us all think. I cannot
come down now as I am tied up
in some very important
business and cannot get mixed
up in this thing now. If
there is anything I can do a
little later let me know in a
letter by Edgar. I hardly
know where I am when I hear
about a thing like this and
am completely knocked down
and out. Yours truly, Meyer
Wolfsheim.
[Closing the letter Nick walks over to the nearest window
looking out to see his pool]
The End.
