Preface
The epitaph on Jasper Lusk’s tombstone simply states, “GONE BUT NOT
FORGOTTEN.” This book is dedicated to JASPER and HARRIET LUSK. Since his
passing in 1918, his descendents have grown to number over two thousand, extending to
the sixth generation.
One purpose of this book is to make sure that Jasper is not forgotten.
Harriet’s tombstone also carries an epitaph as follows:
“REST MOTHER REST,
IN QUIET SLEEP
WHILE FRIENDS IN SORROW
A VIGIL THEE KEEP.”
She was not only a mother to her family, she was also a midwife in the Tamassee
Community. When she went into a home to deliver a baby, if there wasn’t children or
family old enough to take over and do the cooking and caring for the new mother, then
she stayed with them and took care of the family until the mother could do for them. She
passed away at the age of 87 wonderful years, enjoying the pleasure of seeing her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The information in this book came from many sources. My thanks to Lewis Bramlett
Lusk, Jr., for the original material from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,
used to begin this search. I also thank my son, Michael John Lusk for his inspiration,
guidance, and assistance throughout the years that I have worked on this geneology.
I am especially grateful to the family members who helped to gather information and
passed it along to me. I wish to appologize for misspelled names and wrong information.
Without everyone’s help, this book could not have been written. All of you, like Jasper,
will not be forgotten.

NATHAN LUSK
The following is copied from the book: ANCESTORS & FRIENDS (A History &
Genealogy) by William Lusk Crawford, Sr.
The Lusk family was Scotch-Irish and apparently came to America from the Ulster
Province of Ireland. There is a manuscript in the Archives of Nashville, Tennessee that
states they arrived in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania and that William Lusk, Sr. and William
Lusk, Jr. were living there as early as 1730. I do not have the evidence of their actual
arrival in Lancaster Co., however, we have the following Lusks listed as warrantees of
land in Chester Co., Pennsylvania:

Robert Lusk, 50 acres, 20 Feb. 1739
211 acres, 7 Feb. 1742
William Lusk, 20 acres, 22 May 1745

There seems to be no question that Nathan Lusk of Augusta Co., Virginia was a brother
of John and William of Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Also, I believe Robert Lusk of
Chester Co. was a brother of John, William and Nathan Lusk.
The first Lusks to settle in Augusta Co., Virginia were Nathan and John. They settled on
the Shenandoah River and near the Forks of the James River. The muster rolls of
Augusta Co. for 1742 indicate they were in Captain Wilson’s Company during the French
and Indian War of 1742.
The final information we have concerning Nathan Lusk in Augusta Co., Virginia: ”14
Sep. 1748 -NATHAN LUSK’S WILL- wife Elizabeth; sons John and James; daughter
Agnes, wife of Mathew Young. Executor, son James, Teste: Pat Martin, Patrick Cook,
Martha Martin. Proved 16 Feb. 1748 by Patrick and Martha Martin.” (Augusta Co.,
Virginia Will Book I, p. 118.) The will names his wife, Elizabeth and Children: John,
Agnes and James as recipients of the property.

With the help of the records from the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints,
I was able to trace the family line to William Lusk and Henrietta Corbin. Jasper’s death
certificate lists them as his parents, thereby, linking Nathan Lusk down to the present.

AND

WILLIAM JASPER (JEP) LUSK born 20 Feb. l84l, Pickens Co. SC, died 3 June l9l8,
buried at Cheohee Baptist Church Cemetary, Tamassee Community, Salem, SC; son of
William Lusk and Henrietta Corbin Lusk. Jasper had six brothers and sisters, John,
James, Henry, Caroline, Harriet, and Newton. Jasper was born and lived in SC until l850
when the family moved to Cashiers Valley, NC. In l865, he returned home from the
Civil War to his wife and child. Jasper and Harriet were married on 8 Sept. 1862.
HARRIET PRESLEY born 11 Feb. 1841, Whitewater Township, Pickens Co. SC, died
21 Dec. 1926, buried at Cheohee Baptist Church Cemetary; daughter of Dave Presley and
Martha Elizabeth Wilson. She was one of 12 children including Elizabeth, Eliza, Laura,
William B, Amanda, Harrison, James, Benjamin, Bob and three others. The Presleys and
Wilsons lived in SC in the 1840’s, 50’s, and 60’s, according to the SC Census.
JASPER LUSK’S OBITUARY
Jasper Lusk was born in Jackson County, NC* on February 20 , 1841, and was brought
up to young manhood in that section. After the breaking out of the War between the
States he came to South Carolina and volunteered his services, entering the army on
January 8th, 1862, at the age of 21 years, and saw service in Capt. Partlow’s company,
20th Infantry, Keitt’s Regiment. He came home on a furlough on September 8th, 1862,
and was happily married to Miss Harriet Presley. Returning to the army he fought
bravely through many battles, and while struggling through the bloody battle of
Statesburg, Va., he was severely wounded. In March, 1865, he returned home (just after
the surrender) taking up civil life as a farmer, and he labored on through life until, on
June 3rd, 1918, the Lord saw fit to call him home, after a very short illness. He was a
hard-working, upright man, harmless, kind to everybody, a true Christian, loving husband
and father, and an exemplary citizen, always looking forward to the upbringing of the
community in which he lived.
Mr. Lusk left behind to mourn his death, besides his life companion, seven children, four
boys and three girls. Two children, Elizabeth and Henry Clay, preceded him to the grave
a number of years ago. The children living are William D., Geo. N., James M., John W.,
Mrs. Marguerite Calhoun, Mrs. Etta Alexander and Mrs. Delpha Grant. There are a
number of grand and great-grand children , a host of other relatives and many friends to
mourn his death.

 TALES OF JASPER AND HARRIET
Bertha Collins McDonald still can picture her great-grandmother, Harriet Lusk, sitting
around in her long, full skirt and, when she went out, wearing a large, homemade bonnet.
But what she remembers most was staying with her grandparents, Ed and Delphia Grant,
and her great-grandmother, Harriet, during the summers. Harriet would take all the
children for a walk over to Chatham’s Store, on Cheohee Valley Road, where Mr.
Chatham sold his brown sugar out of large barrels. For twenty-five cents, Harriet could
buy a big bag of brown sugar which had large sugar humps in it. When they got back
home, she would sit down in an old cane rocker with all the children gathered around her.
With her hands, she would take a small amount of brown sugar and mash it into what
they called brown sugar balls. Instead of buying candy, this was the kind of sweets they
got back then. The children really liked her brown sugar balls and they sure did enjoy
eating them. Every day they would receive a small one about the size of a quarter and
they would nibble on it as long as it lasted. Then they would lick their fingers looking
forward to another one the next day. All her grandchildren and great-grandchildren really
thought she was a wonderful and loving person.
James Edward Lusk recalls that family members and friends would come together to
shuck their corn or to help out a sick neighbor. After finishing the work, they had candy
pulls and a dance. A candy pull meant that sticks of candy were broken into pieces and
then papers with numbers were put into a bowl. Everyone drew a paper, hoping to get a
high number, and not an unlucky zero. Soon guitars, a mandolin, fiddle, or a french harp
were heard tuning up. The evening ended with musical entertainment. Lusk descendents
were and still are talented with playing musical instruments, singing, clogging and square
dancing.

I. Martha Elizabeth Lusk was born 13 June 1863 in Jackson Co., NC., died 17
Dec. 1906, buried Pleasant Grove Church Cemetary, Cashiers, NC. Married
around 1882.
M: William Andrew Kelley born 9 Jan. 1853 in SC, died 27 Jan.1927,
buried Cheohee Baptist Church Cemetary, Tamassee Community, Salem,
SC. Son of Ailsey and J.W. Kelly. The spelling of the name “Kelly”
changed to “Kelley”after the death of Elizabeth. Her tombstone, which
was made by her husband, carries the name of Kelly without the “e.”
Children: Leander Belton, Willie, Joe, Elbert, Minerva, Roda, Shuford,
Freeman, Effie, Ruthy, Elvira, Luther, Rosa.
Elizabeth and William Kelley were the parents of 13 children. Four of them died as
infants, a not unusual, but sad, occurence in the 1800’s. Elizabeth was a North Carolinian
and William was a South Carolinian, however, they lived in Cashier’s Valley, N.C. for
some years after they married. The Heady Mt. Baptist Church was close by which
became the Kelley Family place of worship. In time, they moved to South Carolina and
were living in Whitewater Township when Elizabeth’s short life ended at age 43.
William transported her body up to the Pleasant Grove Church Cemetary where the 4
little ones had been buried. A current sign at the Church reads: “established 1850,
population 1980 - 20”. Nothing more has been related to me about Elizabeth but I
believe that she was a blessed and loving mother and wife, judging from the qualities of
her husband and family members.
William’s talents are praised extensively even today. He was a carpenter by trade, and
besides building and making the home furniture he also made caskets, headstones,
repaired watches, pulled teeth, and created exquisite art work. He was adept at
constructing musical instruments, as well as playing them and singing. Although he died
65 years ago, several of his cane bottom chairs are still being used today.

Billy and Dorothy were in the midst of raising a large family when Dorothy fell ill and
died. Billy married Ellen Young and continued enlarging the family, totaling 21.
Billy suffered his first stroke when he was 41 years old. After that, he was confined to
walking with a stick, and the farming was left to his sons and daughters. The youngest
son, Davis, was retarded and spent many days sitting in the shade with his father. Ellen
made a living by washing and ironing for others. She also nursed the sick and when
needed she stayed with them. After Billy had a second stroke and then a fatal stroke at
age 73, Ellen continued to be the breadwinner for herself and the five children at home.
Today, Charley and his five sisters enjoy reminicing of growing up in the Salem area.

“William George Lusk died 6-8-23. He was struck by Harley Leopard on May 24.
Leopard’s dog attacked and killed Lusk’s chickens. He threw a rock at the dog, it missed
the dog and hit Leopard. Leopard was carrying a hammer and he threw this at Lusk.
Lusk stated that he was struck with the hammer and that it was not thrown. Leopard came
to the jail and gave himself up.”

Ed Lusk said that his father, Jim Lusk, came to South Carolina from North Carolina at 20
years of age. He lived with the Lays and worked for them for $3.00 a month and room
and board. While living there, he met their neice, Mary Ann Collins whom he married on
her 20th birthday.
According to the census and an old Bible, Mary Ann Collins was the daughter of
Reverend Elijah Collins (1796-1873) and Emilia (Milly) Sheppard (27 Mar. 1834-11 Jan.
1888). Mary Ann was less than a month old when her father died. Sis, and her brother
Isaiah were reared by their mother with the help of Milly’s brothers and sisters, Doc and
JoAnn Sheppard, as well as the Grants and the Lays.
Rev. Elijah Collins was married three times. His first wife was Sarah. They had five
children. His second wife was Jane, and they had no children. In 1869, Elijah married
Milly Sheppard.
Ed said that many a Sunday afternoon, his father and the boys would walk from Tamassee
up Winding Stairs Road to Cashiers Valley to visit relatives.

Margaret was certainly a remarkable lady. At the age of 14 she married a widower, Silas
Calhoun, age 57. He and his first wife, Elizabeth Jane White, (2 June 1935-18 Feb.
1887) had no children. In 1921, after almost 34 years of marriage to Margaret, Silas
passed away leaving her to be Mother and Father to 4 young children ranging in age from
3 to 10 years. Margaret farmed in the Tamassee Valley area, raising cotton, corn and the
vegetables that they ate. She and all the children helped to make a comfortable living.
The children received their education at Wolf Pit School and attended Cheohee Baptist
Church. Walking was their mode of travel.
When the children were old enough to work in the cotton mill, the family moved to
Walhalla. Later on Margaret retired in a house provided by her daughter Exie Taylor.
Margaret was the last surviving widow of the Confederate War in Oconee County. She
passed away in 1971, at the age of 98, after caring for herself even in her later years. She
has the distinction of living the longest of Jasper’s and Harriet’s descendents, at the time
of this writing.

John and Dovie started their young married life in the mountains above Tamassee. At 15,
Dovie, part Cherokee Indian, shared the farm work with her husband who frequently took
on extra jobs helping people in their fields.
The following year was a memorable one as swarms of locusts descended on the area,
destroying nearly all the vegetation in their paths. For days, the sun was nearly clouded
out by the density of the great numbers in motion. Many of the large insects gradually
died and were eaten by the chickens.
John never learned to read , write, or drive a car. He always remained a farmer and
outdoors worker. Dovie learned to read well enough to use the Bible to read scripture to
the family. As the children started school and were educated, she improved her basic
skills of reading and writing. The family stayed in the country until the boys were old
enough to work in the mill, then, for a while, they lived in Walhalla. After Dovie passed
away, John went to live with Lee and his family. (Information given by Nettie Collins)

Etta was a true homemaker, keeping the house a pleasant haven for her husband, daughter and sons. Henry
and the boys worked the fields, garden, and all the outdoor jobs, however, when the broom straw in the
bottoms was just right to be cut, she sallied forth surveying it and choosing the longest and fullest to make
straw brooms. Etta worked on the brooms for days, firmly twisting the twine around the straw. She not
only made all of the brooms for her own use she also later supplied her daughters-in-law with some. After
commercial brooms (which stirred up less dust) were on the local economy, she still made plenty of brooms.

Delphia and Ed were married on the first day of the century, January l, l900. Ed had lived with the Frank
Moody family since he was fourteen. and the Moodys and Lusks were friends. It is not surprising that a
romance blossomed during their visits. After their marriage, Delphia and Ed lived in several different
houses in Cheohee Valley, one being on Oconee Station Road, a short distance from the old Station
Schoolhouse where the children went to school.
Ed farmed, gardened, made syrup, raised hogs and chickens and did all the usual work of that day. When
the weather turned cold, it was time to butcher a hog or two. Bacon and hams were cured in the smoke
house, and sausage was put into empty corn shucks and smoked also. Delphia canned pork in jars to
preserve it for future use. She quilted and made sheets from the white sacks that the hog and chicken feed
came in. The printed sacks were used to make dresses and aprons.
Often on Sunday afternoon, family relatives and friends came to visit. The older ones chose up sides for a
ballgame or “anti, anti over the barn”. The younger group started a game of tag or hopscotch. This was an
enjoyable time of the week for everyone.
