-GUIDELINESSIUE Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance Celebration Essay, Poetry, and Visual Arts Contest Essay, Poetry, and Visual Arts Entries should focus on the theme, We are One: Building a Community of One. ELIGIBILITY - All students currently enrolled in high school during Fall, 2010 are eligible to enter the contest. RULES - HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS MUST REVIEW ALL ENTRIES AND MAY SUBMIT ONLY THE TOP TWO (2) ESSAYS, THE TOP TWO (2) POEMS, AND THE TOP TWO (2) VISUAL ARTS WORKS FROM EACH CLASS TAUGHT. A student may submit only one essay, poem, or visual artwork. Entries will not be accepted from multiple individuals, such as, entering as a team for a particular category. 1. Essay and Poetry - Essays and poems must be typed and double spaced. Essays should be approximately 750-1000 words. Poems should be approximately 500 words or fewer. Entries will be judged on originality, organization, clarity of meaning, grammar, and spelling. Judging will be done by the SIUE Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance Committee. The Committee reserves the right to make no award if in its judgment no entry warrants such recognition. PLEASE DO NOT put the student's name on the essay or poem. Attach six copies of the essay or poem to a completed Entry Form. Winning entries become the property of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. 2. Visual Arts - Visual Arts is defined to include painting, drawing, sculpture, or similar mixed media, excluding film, video, computer generated and other moving imagery. The maximum size for any visual arts entry is three feet by three feet (3' x 3'). Entries submitted on disk must be on a CD or zip disk. Entries will be judged on appropriateness to the theme, artistic ability, craftsmanship, organization, and appropriateness. Judging will be done by the SIUE Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance Committee. The Committee reserves the right to make no award if in its judgment no entry warrants such recognition. Visual Arts entries must be identified by the artist, but in an inconspicuous location. Winning entries become the property of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. DEADLINE - Entries must be received by Friday, November 5, 2010, 4:30 p.m. AWARDS - Winners will be announced on Monday, January 24, 2011. The winners will be invited as special guests for an award presentation at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance Celebration Luncheon on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Each winner will receive a cash award of $100.00 and a plaque of recognition. All participants will receive a certificate of recognition.
