In his essay “Superman and Me”, Sherman Alexie states that reading saved his life. He describes a love for
literature at a young age and the delight that this new passion gave him. For this assignment, you will be writing
a personal essay describing your relationship with literature and/or reading. A personal essay deals with
particular parts of an author’s life and experience. Often in a personal essay an author uses narrative to express
his or her beliefs. Maybe you have vivid memories of a particular book your parents read to you as a child, or
you can recall a book that took you to places you never imagined, or maybe literature has always been a
struggle for you, but every once in a while something piques your interests enough to have you hanging on until
the last page. Use Alexie’s essay and the examples read in class as models, but there is so set requirement for
this essay other than it must give the reader a picture of your relationship and history with reading – positive or
negative. Research and citations are not required for this assignment and you may use first person. MLA format
is required.
