Continuous music in 4/4 time. Use hand percussion to march and keep the beat. Use as
background music to make letters or numbers with the body on the floor alone and in partners or
small groups.
Continuous music in sixes. Relate to the smooth violin music or the sharp drum beats, alternating
smooth and sharp or light and strong movements. Mirror or shadow a partner's movements. Do
circling movements in different body parts. Use for free dancing. Make a play about animals at an
oasis. Use a piece of fabric or a rug for the water. Each person chooses which African animal to
be and shows the way their animal wakes up and stretches, gets a drink, has breakfast and walks,
runs and plays around the oasis. Animals must take turns when drinking from the water and in
general be polite to the other animals.
Contrast 2 melodies. Alternate moving lightly/strongly; smoothly/sharply; with free flow/bound flow;
changing levels, direction, place or focus. Create a rain forest or jungle dance: wind, birds or spirits
fly through the jungle, then explorers slash and stamp. Partners copy each others movements,
changing leaders when the music changes. Dance with upper body half on one part and lower on
the other.
Contrast 2 textures. Change your level, direction, pathway, or size when the music changes.
Partners mirror or follow each others movements. Change leaders when the music changes.
Divide class into 2. During the kalimba music, A dancers move around the space smoothly &
lightly. During the drum music B students stay in one place and make strong shapes and sharp
movements.
Contrast. A: do one motion. B: do a different motion

Contrast. A: do one motion. B: do a different motion, C: do a third motion. Use with clock motion.
Contrast. A: jumping scissor step, B: circle in place. Later, circle with a partner. Transfer to rhythm
sticks-- A: Tap 3 times. B: rub sticks together.
Contrast. A: move in general space. B: Stop and do robotic motions.
Contrast. A: Skip. B: Stop and do robotic motion. Or A: bounce ball with partner, B: change
partners.
Contrast. A: step long-long-short-short-long (with the beat) in a circle or small group snakes.
B: stand still and make some noise. Partners. Step on A, swing on B
Contrast. Divide class into A and B groups. Group B are trees, group A travels through trees, then
at the signal, they switch. There are vocal directions to do this in the song.
Contrast. Fast-slow. Follow the directions to fast and slow, using scarves or bodies
Contrast. Fast-slow. Follow the fast and slow music, using scarves or bodies
Contrast. Free flow changing into bound flow. Twist scarves in free and bound motion as the music
dictates. Move with smooth movements, gradually becoming more sharp (choppy) as the music
changes. Move through general space on the free music and make shapes in self space during
the bound music. Add a prop for variety. Follow a partner's movements on the free music, stop and
make shapes together connecting body parts or on opposite levels on the bound music.
Contrast. Loud music for heavy motions, soft music for light motions
Contrast. Low-high-medium changes in pitch. Separate class into three groups and play the music
while assigning each group either the low, middle, or high pitched part. Each group stands up and
dances when their music plays, then sits down. Change the size of your movements when the

pitch changes - try big movements on low sounds and small movements on high sounds; reverse.
Contrast. Low, heavy music, contrasting with medium and middle music, and high, light music in ¾
time.
Contrast. Skip in 6/8 meter, Trot in duple meter, Walk in 5/4 meter.
Contrast. Smooth & sharp motifs played simultaneously. Half the dancers move to the smooth
sounds, half move to the sharp sounds. Reverse roles when the instruments reverse. Exchange
props if using them. Dance through general space relating to the smooth sounds, dance in self
space relating to the sharp sounds, reverse.
Contrast. Walk to eighth, quarter, and half notes.
Contrasting 2 melodies that change speed. Dance slowly with the slow music and quickly with the
fast music. Choose a “conductor.” The conductor uses a “baton” to lead the slow part. Dancers
follow the baton’s directions in self space on the slow music and dance freely through general
space on the fast music. Dance with one body part on the slow music & all parts on the fast music
(or vice versa).
Contrasting 3 melodies that suggest different environments. Move like an underwater creature
with the first theme, then like a creature that moves on land. With the third theme, pretend you are
a creature that flies. Move smoothly alone or with a partner on the slow music, move sharply
alone or away from your partner on the second music, add turns on the third theme. Change levels
when the music changes. Dance with a different body part each time the music changes.
Contrasting melodies-3. Move in straight pathways during the first section, curved during the
second and in zigzag pathways during the third section. Respond to the remaining sections with
straight, curved or zigzag pathways. Use streamers to trace different pathways in the air: curvy,
sharp, straight, zig-zag.
Direction. Follow the vocal directions with up and down
Direction. Follow the vocal directions.

Echo game with 8 counts of a melody that repeats. The teacher or one student leads movement
(with a scarf or streamer if you like) then the group echoes the movement as best they can.
Change leaders. See how well you can make your movement match the music.
Echo song with each section decreasing in length. In a large circle, echo a leader's movements.
Try this with a prop (scarf, puppet or streamer). Follow a leader through general space. On each
phrase (or on your signal) change leaders. Change levels, directions, body parts, or locomotor
movement each time.
Echo. Listen to the voice, then echo with body percussion or instruments
Echo. Listen to the voice, then echo with body percussion or instruments
Echo. On the call of each phrase, one person makes a motion, others copy on the response. On
"Um a leya leya", all do the "Monkey"
Echo. Pick partners. During A part, there are 3 sections. !st section, partner A lead, 2nd section,
partner B leads. 3rd section, both people silently communicate to do the same thing. During B
Section, snake around to find a new partner.
Finger Play. Hide hands behind back and sing: Where is Thumbkin? Where is Thumbkin?
Bring out one thumb, then the other: Here I am! Here I am!
Have thumbs "bow to each other": How are you today, sir? Very well, I thank you.
Hind hands/thumbs behind back: Run away. Run away.
Continue singing with: Where is Pointer…Middle…Ringer…Pinkie
Fingerplay. The eency weency spider went up the waterspout. Down came the rain and washed

Follow the leader, moving like different kinds of dinosaurs. Make several lines with 5-8 students in
a line so they get a chance to lead frequently.
Follow the leader: Musical fragments from the previous pieces. When the music changes, the
leader goes to the back of the line and the next person leads. Each leader tries to show the music
with his or her movements. Move the way the music makes you feel, freeze in a shape on the
pause--try different levels, size, directions, pathways, speed, energy and body parts. Freeze or
balance in a shape on the pause.
Follow, trying to copy the body percussion heard in the piece.
Freeze. Dance to the music, freeze on the command. Change it up: call out how to freeze--in a
twisted shape, a funny face, etc.
Freeze. Folk melody with drum breaks of increasing length. Dance through general space (with a
prop streamer, scarf or instrument) during the violin, then stop your feet and freeze (or balance)
during the drum.
Freeze. Follow the vocal directions.
Freeze. March, gallop, skip, or walk on all fours around the room without touching anyone. Freeze
and hold when the music stops. Take turns entering the circle and dancing with a partner while
the music plays. A new pair enters each time the music stops.
Freeze. Move until music freezes. Change it up by freezing into animal shapes.
Freeze. Pat head 8X, then shoulders 8X, tummy 8X, hips or legs 8X. Keep following that pattern,
but freeze when music stops. Later, walk to the music and freeze when the music stops. Can use
this with instruments.
Freeze. Start sitting, during the slide whistle, stand up, dance with the music, then sit when it
stops.
Freeze. Walk or tap Rhythm Sticks to the music, stop when music stops.

down…"
Replace words. Sing the song using the motions in parentheses: Oh, the bear went over the
mountain…(march around room)…to see what he could see. And all that he could see…(shade
eyes)…was the other side of the mountain…(shrug shoulders). Then use your own words, and
make up your own motions such as: The bear hopped over the mountain…(hop around room)…to
see what he could see. And all that he could see…(shade eyes)… was a giant bowl of ice
cream…(pantomime eating ice cream).
Replace words. Sing the song. With instrumental track, add your own words.

Replace words. Sing this song and then make "rain" sounds. Give each student a piece of
newspaper to crinkle, starting from one corner of the paper and slowly gathering it into their hands.
Point to each student one at a time to have them start crinkling. The sound will get louder as more
students join in. When all are crinkling, have them wave their papers in the air for thunder. Point to
each student one at a time to drop out and the sound gradually comes to a stop. Another way is by
clapping hands, adding students one at a time. For thunder, stomp feet. Here in New Mexico we
want the rain, so with the instrumental track, sing: Rain, rain, come and stay, rain and rain and rain
all day.

Rhythm sticks. Students feel the 1-2-3 beat by tapping once on the floor, then tapping twice on
their thighs. As they gain more skill, they can cross their sticks in the air and tap twice on beats 2
and 3. As they progress, students can pair up, sitting facing each other, with fluted sticks in their
right hands. (Partner's R and L hands are opposite.) They tap both sticks once on the floor, then
tap only the fluted sticks twice with a partner.
Rhythm sticks. Tap in ¾ time.
Rhythm sticks. Tap sticks or play shakers to this jazzy piece. Freeze when the music does.
Transfer to walking steps and freeze.
Rhythm sticks. Use 5 beats of body percussion: pat-pat-clap-snap-snap. Perform with the music.
Change the snaps to patting a partner's hands. Transfer to rhythm sticks. Beats 1 and 2: tap
thighs. Beat 3: tap sticks together. Beats 4 and 5: tap partner's sticks. Form 2 concentric circles.
Everyone faces clockwise (to the left). Beats 1 and 2: everyone takes 2 steps forward (the circles
will advance in opposite directions). Beat 3: everyone taps their own sticks together. Beats 4 and
5: everyone taps their right sticks with the person across from them. Continue in the same pattern.
Scarves. Follow the vocal directions.

Scarves. Move scarves like a butterfly to this music
Scarves. Wave to the staccato (bouncy) and legato (smooth) music. Transfer that to body
movement.
Slow continuous music in 4/4 time. Use for free dancing, resting, stretching. Mirror a partner’s or
leader’s movements in slow motion.

Stretchy bands. Move to the music.
Stretchy bands. Move to the music. Divide into 3 groups, each group following either the violin,
cello, or string bass.
Theme. Brainstorm all the different activities you can do in snow (build a snowman, snowball fight,
sledding, skating, etc. Students improvise these activities to the music. Play the song and call out
an activity. Put on the music and free dance. Freeze dance: allow students to free dance, then
press pause for a moment (the kids must stop moving). Restart the player and they start moving
again.
Theme. Create a theme based dance on metamorphosis, starting in a cocoon, emerging from the
cocoon, stretching and drying their wings, then flying, eating and resting.
Theme. Create a theme-based dance with cowboy gestures. Use as ABCC folk dance. A: step
forward 4 back 4 (2X) B: swing partner R then L, C: grand R/L or promenade.
Theme. Move scarves like a butterfly to this music
Theme. Use this African percussion music as a background for improvising movements of jungle
animals. If control is an issue, allow one to three students to move at a time. Try half the class
moving at a time and the others practicing good audience skills.
Theme. Use to create atmosphere for reading snow stories, improvise snow activities to music.
Theme. Whale theme alternating with a slow rhythmic theme in ¾ time. Sit in a circle and one at a
time pretend to be a sea creature in the center of the circle. Others guess what creature. Use for
free dancing, improvisation and turning. Half the students pretend to be seaweed, planted in one
spot. The other half pretend to be a sea creature such as a fish, crab, octopus, jellyfish, etc. and
weave through the seaweed. Switch groups.
Time. Put markers on the floor as "home." During the verse, students walk "out on the town".
During the counting, try to get back home in as many steps. For example, if it's 10 o'clock, take 10
steps. Don't get home too soon--perhaps the steps are very tiny.
