SUSPENSION Roll 1 or 2: You keep up with your work and are able to catch up when you return to school (proceed to the next grade). Roll 3 or 4: You fall seriously behind and are forced to repeat the grade (lose a turn, then go back to that grade). Roll 5 or 6: You begin hanging out with some old friends who have already dropped out of school and are now selling marijuana to get by. (proceed to Homeless/Criminalized Economy) HOMELESS/CRIMINALIZED ECONOMY Roll a 1, and then you are able to access the services you need to continue in school. Roll 2-6, and you are unable to complete school. Discuss the kinds of difficulties you might be facing, and what kinds of services could better your situation. Roll again once a minute and if you roll a 1 you can return to the grade you came from. FOSTER CARE: Roll an odd number: your foster family is ok. Proceed to the next grade, but discuss how being in foster care and not being able to see your family might affect you and your performance in school. Roll an even number: your foster family is not ok. You go to a different foster family, roll again to see if they are ok. If they aren't, then you run away. Proceed to HOMELESS/CRIMINALIZED ECONOMY. JUVIE: Once you've been to juvie, you can never roll a 1 again because you now have a criminal record. If you do roll a 1, roll again. Roll an odd number: you complete your time. Return to the grade that you previouly came from. Roll an even number: you have not complied with the "rules." Your sentence is increased. Roll again. GROUP HOME: You were sent here by ICE and you are deported when you turn 18. SIXTH GRADE 6A. You’re failing math. (Discuss some reasons why you might be failing math. Do all of them have to do with your ability to do math?) Roll 1-3, and your teacher lets you do extra credit and you move to the next grade. Roll 4-6, and you flunk. You’re repeating your grade! 6B. Your mom is driving you to school, and a cop pulls the car over. (Discuss some reasons why your mom would get pulled over in the first place. Then discuss some reasons why she might get arrested.) Roll 1-2, and you get off with a warning, proceed to the next grade. Roll 3-4, and you’re getting a ticket. You miss your first class and are suspended for "skipping" class. Roll 5-6, and your mom is getting arrested. Proceed to foster care. SEVENTH GRADE 7A. Your teacher says you are being disruptive. Roll 1-3, and you get a reprimand, but your teacher let’s you stay in class, proceed to the next grade. Roll 4-5, and you get suspended. Roll a 6, and you’re in a school that uses police officers as security. You get arrested! Proceed to juvie 7B. You come to school with bruises on your arms. Roll 1-2, you tell your teacher that you hurt yourself, and your teacher believes you. Continue to next grade. Roll 3-4, and your teacher calls CPS, they investigate, and CPS decides your home is safe. Continue to next grade. Roll 5-6, and CPS removes you from your home. Move to foster care. EIGHTH GRADE 8A. Your principal writes you up for not following the dress code. (Discuss what styles of clothing would violate the dress code. Do you think this is based on race/class/gender? Who benefits from this dress code?) Roll 1-4, and you get off with a warning, proceed to next grade. Roll 5-6, and you get suspended. 8B. You went camping last weekend and forgot that your pocket knife was still in your backpack. Roll 1-2, and nobody notices, you take it out when you get home from school. Proceed to next grade. Roll 3-4, and there was a "routine" bag check. You tell your story and they believe you, but still get suspended. Proceed to suspension. Roll 5-6, and there was a "routine" bag check. You tell your story but there is a zero tolerance policy. Proceed to juvie. NINTH GRADE 9A. You are kicked out of your home for being queer. (Discuss how this might affect your schooling.) Roll 1-2, and you stay with a friend or family who accepts you. Proceed to next grade. Roll 3-4, and you are sent to foster care. Before proceeding to foster care, roll again. If you roll 1-4, your foster family is not queer friendly and you run away. Proceed to homeless/criminalized economy. Roll 5-6, your foster family is ok with your queernss. Proceed to foster care. Roll 5-6, and you have no where to go. Proceed homeless/criminlaized economy. TENTH GRADE 10A. You were working late last night and slept through your alarm this morning. Roll 1-2, and you miss your first class but this is the first time it has happened. Proceed to next grade. Roll 3-4, and you are sent to the principal's office when you arrive at school because this happens a lot (because you work a lot). Proceed to suspension for skipping class. Roll 5-6, and you are stopped by a cop on your way to school. You are arrested for truancy. Proceed to juvie. 10B. Your school is searched with drug dogs and they find a small bag of marijuana in your locker. Roll 1-3, and you are suspended for possession of an illegal drug. Roll 4-6, and they think that you are a drug dealer and you go to juvie. ELEVENTH GRADE 11A. You get arrested for something minor and the police determine that you are undocumented. (Did you know that the police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) collaborate in this way?) Roll 1, and you qualify for and can afford to stay under the DREAM Act. Proceed to next grade. Roll 2-6, and you are sent to a group home until you are 18 at which point you are deported. 11B. You do poorly on the standardized tests which determine college opportunities. Roll 1-2, and you have enough support in your life to know that these tests dont define you. Proceed to the next grade. Roll 3-4, and you think you're not smart so you stop doing your homework. Repeat this grade. Roll 5-6, and you think you have no future so you drop out. TWELFTH GRADE 12A. You get into a fight at school, but no one is seriously injured even though there was some shoving that happened. Roll 1, and you are sent home for the day. You still get to graduate! Roll 2-4, and you are suspended. Roll 5-6, and you go to juvie. 12B. You are at a party where drugs and alcohol are present. Roll 1-2, your parents ground you. You still get to graduate! Roll 3-4, the police were called and you all got warnings. You still get to graduate! Roll 5-6, the police were called and you get arrested. Proceed to juvie. (Discuss why you might get a warning as opposed to getting arrested. Might race/class/gender factor into the outcome?)
