Vancouver Science World Visits Rayleigh Just before Christmas, we were given the opportunity to host a traveling programme for Vancouver’s Science World Centre on Friday, January 15th. All primary students will see a special presentation in the gym on the topic of “It’s a Gas!” (9:00 – 10:00) while the intermediates will be seeing an “energetic” presentation on the topic of “Energy in Action” (10:30 – 11:30). Stranger Danger Cst. Brian Smith will be at our school on Monday, January 18th to train students in the proper procedures if ever approached by a suspicious stranger. Cst. Smith has worked with our students before and has provided all students with age appropriate strategies. TRU Lunch Time Basketball Camps Once again, our grade 4 – 7 students will have the opportunity to participate in TRU Basketball camps during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan.12th– Feb. 4th, a total of 8 sessions. The fee for these camps is $10 for all 8 sessions with the TRU students getting all the proceeds. Sign up information will be made available to students wanting to participate. Student Led Conferences Please mark Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12 as Early Dismissal Days to allow for Student Led Conferences to occur. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 on these two days. Each teacher will send home a schedule for you to attend your child’s conference. This format is always special in that each child gets to “show case” their accomplishments and areas of growth. More information will be coming home by the end of the first week in February. The Olympics are Coming! Meeting for Proposed Middle School The decision of having a Middle School at Brock Secondary next year will be made in mid February. All parents are encouraged to attend a special “feeder school” meeting on Tuesday, February 9th (7:00 p.m.) at the Henry Grube Education Centre. If this concept is approved, our current grade 6 and 7 students will be attending Brock next September in a Grades 7 – 9 Middle School. Be sure to attend this meeting to find out more. Please contact me if you would like further information, prior to the meeting. Foundation Skills Assessment Beginning January 18th, all grade 4 and grade 7 students in the province will write FSA tests. These tests are used for programme assessment as well as District and Provincial information. Students will complete assessments in Numeracy, Problem Solving, Reading, and Writing Skills. All students are expected to write these tests and only students that fit the criteria given by the Ministry of Education can be excused. More specific information regarding the time table will be coming home to parents of students in grade 4 and 7 prior to January 18th. Our intermediate students will be studying and participating in a “Mini-Olympics” later in February. Teams will be formed to represent countries from around the world to compete in hockey, bob-sled racing, team biathlon, curling and “trophy-cup stacking”. Our Mini- Olympics afternoon will be Friday, February 26th. Community Ice Rink Due to water problems at the tennis courts in the park, the Community Ice Rink has been prepared at our black top area by the mailboxes. It has been some time since we have had the rink on our property, due to safety concerns. We have agreed to have the rink here on a “trial” basis to see if we can get the cooperation of students and families to follow district safety guidelines when using the ice rink. Students will be allowed to use the ice rink at lunch times and after school provided that they have skates and a helmet on. Students are aware that if the basic safety rules are not followed we will have to have the rink removed as it poses a safety concern if protection is not worn. If your families are using the rink at other times, modeling helmet usage would help. Hopefully, this can become an integral part of our encouraging safe, healthy and active living. Important Cross Walk Safety Reminder We need your cooperation when dropping off your child on Puett Ranch Road. Please remind your child/children to use the supervised crosswalk rather than darting across Puett Ranch Road from a vehicle to the school gate opening. Parent – Child Mother Goose Program® This is a free programme designed to target prekindergarten aged children and their parents. Trained Early Childhood Educators share with parents and children fun games, poems and songs that promote the skills needed for a successful Kindergarten transition. If you know of anyone with a child aged 3-5, please have them contact the school to enroll in this well received and enjoyable time. The program starts next Wednesday, January 13th and will run until the Spring Break from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Siblings of these aged students are also welcome to attend. Family Movie Night Jan 29 The next Family Movie Night will be on Friday, January 29th. The school doors will open at 6:00pm and the movie will start at 6:15pm.
