Experience in the Field
1969-1973 Social Worker, Wing Director and Acting Director of Guidance at the Training
Institution, Central Ohio, in Columbus, Ohio, a maximum security training school for boys which
is one of the more violent juvenile facilities in the United States.
1974-1975 Coordinator of work release program at the minimum-medium security prison unit in
the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
-As part of this five years of experience, I have had the opportunity to be involved with one
hundred juvenile murderers in the past thirty years and about half that many adult murderers in the
past twenty years.

1989 Coordinator of a Community Gang Deactivation Program for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls, Iowa
communities.

Designer of a gang deactivation program with a group of <CITE>Gangster Disciples</CITE>
in Waterloo, Iowa.
1993-Present Various contacts with African American adult street gangs in Chicago and Minneapolis.
I am known and respected among the larger street gangs in Chicago, especially the Vice Lords and the
Gangster Disciples.
Present Position
Professor of sociology at the University of Northern Iowa where I have taught the past nineteen
years. My Ph.D. is from Ohio State University in 1973.
