LAST TWO WEEKS: 22 & 29 October 2013 22 October Meeting organised by Director Jim Johnston and the Youth & Vocational Committee. Victoria University Professor Jim introduced the format for the evening and our Guest Speakers. Guest Speakers: Mrs. Gabrielle Gunn, Head of Science at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School and the two Marsden Science students we had sponsored who were chosen to represent RD 9940 at the Rotary Science & Technology Forums: Sabrina Koh in Auckland and Morgan Archer in Canberra. Gabrielle Gunn, their teacher, provided the science background and purpose of the Forums. Sabrina then described her experience attending the Auckland Forum. There, the studies covered geo science, food science, molecular biology, biomedical science, microbiology and ‘glow-in-the-dark’ proteins. Plus, “lots Page 1 of 7 of sport” such as volleyball, and a new experience – “a look behind the scenes” with an “Explore Auckland Day,” a formal dinner – and a “National Sheet Day” (all hung out to dry in front of buildings!” Sabrina said it had been “a valuable opportunity.” Morgan then described the Forum in Canberra that she had attended – “where there was also laughter and love” and travel – to Pine Island, a space station, the State Parliament and a Yarralumba Woolshed. Their lecture subjects included forensic chemistry, Australia’s Institute of Sport and chemistry at ANU (including ice cream!). Along with the hands-on science, the Canberra forum also included sessions on science in communication and science in industry, which Morgan found interesting. Overall, “it was a great opportunity!” In conclusion, Sabrina and Morgan ended their presentation with a “Big Thank You” to Karori Rotary. Their respective experiences provided them with a wider appreciation of possible career pathways which they found valuable. Their comments were illustrated with some very good overheads and their presentations gave us an informative overview of these Forums. Question time included asking if the Forums had given them different ideas as to how to realize opportunities from their actual degrees. Thanks: Jamie Milne. ANNOUNCEMENTS Pres.
