Manifest Destiny: The Old VS The New
Old Manifest Destiny:
New Manifest Destiny:
By the 1850s, the United States had fulfilled its
vision of Manifest Destiny-the desire to expand
from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. For the
next three decades, Americans, preoccupied with
healing the wounds of the Civil War and adjusting
to industrialization, had little interest in
conquering lands outside of North America.
At the turn of the century, as the United States
became an industrial giant, politicians, military
leaders and scholars believed that the nation
must protect its economic interests and stake
out a place in the world equal to the European
powers. These expansionists urged that national
pride required the United States to have a new
Manifest Destiny. So with its Navy, the Great
White Fleet, thought to be the best in the world,
the U.S. embarked upon a policy of imperialism
to extend its power across the Pacific Ocean and
around the Caribbean Sea. Over the next 20
years, the United States would control Alaska,
Hawaii, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Panama Canal
and other territories throughout the world.
Promoted primarily by industrial interests
Goal was acquisition of
 raw materials
 markets for surplus goods
 access to coaling stations and bases for
navy and merchant ships
Expansion outside North America
Usually influenced by patriotic and nationalist
concerns
Promoted primarily by agricultural interests
Goal was acquisition of
 new territories
 new lands for settlement and farming
Expansion in North America
Often influenced by sectional concerns
