Voices of Protest
Weekend Homework due Wednesday November, 9.
1. Read chapters 18 though to 25. Make notes as usual.
2. Using the sheet, research and write down the meaning of all the
words that get spelled out during the two Scrabble games.
3. Write a minimum of TWO pages, typed, for ONE of the
following questions. You should write formally, using relevant
textual detail to back up your ideas.
EITHER:
How does the Gilead regime create divisions between women, thus
stopping them from uniting and protesting the new system?
OR
The Aunts are a powerful voice in Offred’s new life. What is their
function within the Gilead regime and how effective does this appear
to be?
OR
Why does Atwood create her narrator as a woman like Offred rather
than Moira or even Offred’s mother, women who are more vocal and
more ‘feminist’ in their beliefs? What effect does this have on the
book?
EXTRA CREDIT:
Do more than one of these questions!
The above questions may well start to form the basis of your context
papers. Try to be as detailed as possible, prove your points, and
where possible, bring in relevant context from beyond the book.
