Drama Workshop.
 What could have happened to change the outcome of the evening?
 At which points in the evening do you think things could have been very
different?
 What influence do you think the girls had on that evening?
 Using Role play – produce two conflict scenarios that have a different
outcomes.
Introduction.
This is a filmed Drama Workshop by a group of students from St Mary’s College. It is a
stylistic reconstruction of ‘The Night Out’
Task whilst watching film
Whilst watching the workshop, look for the catalyst. When did a really good night out
turn into a tragedy?
Definition of catalyst – the person or thing that causes a change
Watch the film - 11 mins
At the end of the filmed piece put students into small groups.
Ask them to discuss ‘what was the key point that they have identified as the catalyst’,
and to say why.
Girls can have a very powerful effect on what happens in these situations. It can be
positive or negative.
Some examples can be:
Positive
Admire restraint
Encourage walking away as the ‘brave’
thing to do.
Laugh at macho posturing.
Show disgust for any form of violence.
Show dislike of drunken aggressive
behaviour.
Show distaste for people who are so
drunk they can barely function.
Negative
Encourage macho posturing.
Admire violent behaviour as strong and
‘manly’.
Show enjoyment when boys see them as
possessions to be fought over.
Admire excessive drinking.
Encourage aggressive behaviour
The same can be true of the boys’ responses if girls get very drunk or display violent
tendencies.
Adam died because of alcohol fuelled, reckless and violent behaviour. He was never
involved in the ‘banter’ that built up to the final punch, and it was all about nothing, yet
it cost Adam his life.

When you hear the story and watch the drama you see so many ‘if only’, and ‘what if?’
parts to the evening.
Working in small groups and using role play, think of any conflict situation you may
have seen or even been part of. Devise two scenarios one with a positive outcome
and one with a negative outcome.
Each group will perform their role plays and those watching will identify the catalyst.
Conclusion of the lesson will bring together the idea of personal responsibility in these
situations. It will also clearly identify the way that small situations can be dealt with
responsibly or can lead to very unnecessary aggression, violence and sometimes
tragedy.
