La Linea essay questions
Pick one of the following essay questions based on your reading of the book La
Linea and our discussion of immigration. Write a 5-6 paragraph essay to answer
your question. Make sure to include at least three statistics to add to your content
from a reputable internet source. This needs to be typed/word-processed and will
be graded using the 6-Trait Writing Rubric you received earlier in the year. Points
will also be given for including the internet sources and including those
references.
1. On p. 113 of the book Miguel, Elena, and Javi come across the bodies of
what appear to be a mother and child in the desert. The book provides
some thought provoking questions on the top of p. 114: “Who was she?
Where did she come from? Where was she going? Who would wait for her,
and the child, only to have them never appear? The desert had claimed her
life and the life of her child. It would now take them away completely.”
Create an essay based on this quote.
2. Write a piece of commentary responding to the J. Richard Cohen essay. It
should 1) explain and expound on a specific part of something mentioned
in the original essay, and 2) express their agreement or disagreement with
Cohen.
a. Paragraph One: introduction in which student tells the reader about
Cohen’s essay.
b. Paragraph Two: Students mention the item that most piqued their
interest in Cohen’s article.
c. Paragraphs 3-5: students research and write about a topic that
piqued their interest, presenting at least three related facts.
d. Paragraph 6: Student agrees/disagrees with Cohen and closes
essay.
3. Using the information gathered from various sources, students will write a
persuasive essay arguing either for a liberal U.S. immigration policy or a
more conservative, restrictive policy. The essay should define both types of
policies.
