Unit 1: Discovering an Author’s Purpose

Unit Essential Questions: “What influences a writer to create?”
“How do relationships between characters develop meaning?”
Overarching Question: “How do authors use the resources of language to impact an audience?”
Essential Question: “How is our understanding of culture and society constructed through and by language?”
Assessments: (1) A formal essay comparing and contrasting the relationships within one piece of literature studied and
how the development of those relationships brings meaning to the story. (2) A timed writing identifying evidence of the
author’s purpose for writing said piece from two pieces of literature studied.
