As a final task for our study of Treasure Island, you will write an essay comparing and contrasting characters from the book to those in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” in at least four paragraphs. You will have a choice of which two characters to compare/contrast: Long John Silver and Captain Jack Sparrow OR Jim Hawkins and Will Turner OR Long John Silver and Captain Barbossa In your essay, be sure to do the following: Explain how their personalities are similar. Include traits and examples. Explain how their personalities are different. Include traits and examples. Explain how each character is changed, if at all, by his adventure. How does he react to it at the end? Include details from the book AND the film that support your argument. Included in this packet is the NYS reading/writing rubric (which is used to grade the New York State ELA Exam), which will be used to grade your essay. Please look it over before you begin writing. Remember that a rubric is a set of elements that we should see in your writing. It can be used to guide you as you write. Here is a checklist of things you must do before you hand in your final draft: Fill out the graphic organizer Write first draft that includes at least four paragraphs Include citations for each quote in the following format: o “The quote from the book goes in quotation marks and the citation (page number reference) follows before the period” (pg. 24). Participate in a peer conference and take back your sheet with feedback from your partner Check writing for careless spelling or usage mistakes. Review your rubric and check your essay against it Staple the following materials to your final draft o Outlines, graphic organizers, etc. o Conference sheets o Any related notes, brainstorming, etc. o All drafts with comments/revisions on them Good Luck!
