I expect to see growth in my capacity as a leader and activist. I hope to develop working relationships with community leaders as we critically analyze and share ideas for strategies and nuanced insights to topical issues affecting our intersectional communities. What, if any, experience have you had with community organizing? In 2015 I started working with Asian Pacific Islander youth leaders on the Youth Leadership Council of API Equality-Los Angeles, a grassroots community-based organization that advocates for API LGBT equality and equity. With an emphasis on collaboration and coalition building, I worked with youth to build awareness on policies that affect the API communities, and program community events including a youth-centered panel on mental health and trauma as children of diaspora to stimulate open dialogue with elder members of the API LGBT community. I was also a founding member of a grassroots student-run organization on campus that advocated and fought for representation, diversity, and institutional support for marginalized communities. Having recently graduating college, I moved to NYC to work as a City Year corps member, mentoring and tutoring students of color by implementing individualized support through a social emotional learning model. At the same time, I aim to further my involvement and radicalization in social justice initiatives and trainings centered on LGBTSTGNC People of Color and familiarize myself with NYC community organizing at the Audre Lorde Project. If you have had experience with community organizing, please state the number of years: 1.5 How do you plan to use the knowledge and skills gained from participating in this training? My participation in ALP’s Daring to Be Powerful Training would allow me to grow in areas such as public speaking, practicing fundamental organizational strategies, improving workshop facilitation skills and gaining a better understanding of community organizing in NYC. My future goal as a professional is to continue working with and for intersectional communities of color in the areas of social justice education, youth organizing and policy work.
