Letter to Lady Macbeth
To my dear wife
We won the battle against the enemy of Scotland. I have some exciting news
to tell you. When Banquo and I were returning from the battle, we met three
very strange women on the heath. They seemed to be women, but they had
beards!
You’ll never guess what they said- that I would be Thane of Cawdor! If that
wasn’t enough, they also said I will be king. And then two men arrived to tell
me that Duncan was making me Thane of Cawdor! Can you believe that?
The previous Thane of Cawdor has been executed because he was a traitor!
Well, if I am to be king, just think what that will make you- my queen!
I love you so much that I really wanted to share this with you. I’ll be with you
soon.
I have sent this ahead, so that you know everything that has happened.
Your faithful husband,
Macbeth

Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy
Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be
What thou art promised: yet do I fear thy nature;
It is too full o' the milk of human kindness
To catch the nearest way thou wouldst be great;
Art not without ambition, but without
The illness should attend it: what thou wouldst highly,
That wouldst thou holily; wouldst not play false,
And yet wouldst wrongly win: thou'dst have, great Glamis,
That which cries 'Thus thou must do, if thou have it;
And that which rather thou dost fear to do
Than wishest should be undone.'
