08-09 AP World History – Assignment #3 – up to 30 pts.
Read Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane (will need to get on own).
The work below will be collected on the first day of school next fall.
Before reading the book:
1. Do some research on “apartheid” in South Africa. What is it? What affect did it have
on the people living there? How and why did it end?
After reading the book:
2. Write a core paragraph (topic sentence, evidence, commentary) answering the
question: Is the message in Kaffir Boy one of despair and hopelessness or one of hope?
3. Pick what you believe are the two most significant passages in Kaffir Boy. Write each
of the passages and in detail explain its significance.
There will be a test on each book checking for completion and comprehension. You
will need to score at least 70% on this test. As long as you have read the book, this
will not be a problem.
